In this translation, the writings on religious painting by the Spanish painter Francisco Pacheco are for the first time made available to an English-speaking readership. The Art of Painting by Francisco Pacheco is an invaluable literary and theoretical source for the study of Spanish 17th-century painting; one of the major contributions of this book is the nine chapters, translated here, devoted to the issue of decorum in religious painting and the subject of religious iconography. Among the many subjects addressed in this book are Pacheco's own paintings, providing a rare insight into his artistic thinking, the reception of his paintings by a range of religious and secular authorities, and scholarly discussion of the historical basis for the iconography of subjects such as the Trinity, the Immaculate Conception, the Crucifixion and numerous saints including Sts. Jerome, Francis of Assisi, and Ignatius of Loyola.

In this volume, twelve specialists examine the role of graphic signs such as cross signs, christograms, and monograms in the late Roman and post-Roman worlds and the contexts that facilitated their dissemination in diverse media. The essays collected here explore the rise and spread of graphic signs in relation to socio-cultural transformations during Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, focusing in particular on evolving perceptions and projections of authority. They ask whether some culturally specific norms and practices of graphic composition and communication can be discerned behind the rising corpus of graphic signs from the fourth to tenth centuries and whether common features can be found in their production and use across various media and contexts. The contributors to this book analyse the uses of graphic signs in quotidian objects, imperial architectural programmes, and a wide range of other media. In doing so, they argue that late antique and early medieval graphic signs were efficacious means to communicate with both the supernatural and earthly worlds, as well as to disseminate visual messages regarding religious identity and faith, and social power.

Mit dem 2014 im Themenfeld "Klassische Archäologie" ausgeschriebenen Preis wird der 1946 geborene Franzose Alain Schnapp ausgezeichnet. Er ist Professor für Archäologie der Universität Paris I und war Leiter der Abteilung "Kunstgeschichte und Archäologie". Die Jury würdigt damit einen Wissenschaftler, der seit vielen Jahren Grundlagenforschung in Form archäologischer Grabungen mit wissenschaftlicher Recherche und herausragender schriftstellerischer Arbeit verbindet. Schnapp habe, so die Jury, grundlegende Beiträge zur historischen Bildanthropologie in der Antike verfasst, die Ikonographie der griechischen antiken Darstellungen erforscht, bedeutende Ergebnisse zur archäologischen Stadtraumforschung und Stadtgeschichte im antiken Griechenland geliefert und mit seinen in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzen Büchern zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Archäologie das Fundament für eine neue Perspektive auf dieses Fachgebiet gelegt.
