Im Bauwesen wurde Mitte der 90er Jahre begonnen, singuläre Gestaltungsprinzipien und Methoden der Lean Production zu adaptieren sowie neue bauspezifische Methoden zu entwickeln (Lean Construction). In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die bisweilen einzeln betrachteten Methodenbausteine zu einem Ganzheitlichen Produktionssystem Modell für Bauproduktions-Unternehmen zusammengeführt und vervollständigt. Dieses Bau-PSM ist ein Ordnungsrahmen für die Transformation in ein ""leanes"" Bauunternehmen.

Lean management describes a set of methods combined with a management philosophy which aims at eliminating waste in logistics processes. In production logistics, lean is already widespread and applied successfully. Research has shown that lean also works in a warehousing environment. In transport logistics, lean is still at a low level of maturity in both research and practice. This work contributes to closing this gap by introducing Heijunka leveling to transport logistics.

SPARKLE - Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Precision Agriculture (SPA) is a course aiming to increase 'agripreneurship' among students, entrepreneurs and academics, enhancing knowledge and skills on technologies, innovations, entrepreneurial thinking and problem-solving skills into the farming sector. It also aims to transform the agricultural sector into a SPA-oriented system that could build an innovative ecosystem of agripreuners and agritechnicians around agriculture and entrepreneurship. The course is divided into four areas (SPA Overview, Technologies, Social and economic aspects and entrepreneurship in agriculture), 12 lessons and 55 topics leads students on a path for deepening the knowledge in a comprehensive system where technologies are a piece of the whole structure.

This dissertation deals with the development of a Virtual Reality-based construction site control centre for earth work in consideration of lean management principles. Beside the enhanced availability of information and increased transparency in presentation, a raise in the performance on-site by the use of a digital Kanban system could be proved.

Several in-depth studies have verified the positive impact of lean techniques on performance indicators in production environments. Studies performed on warehouse environments have partially confirmed this. This thesis helped to close the gap between the disparities in the level of evidence mentioned above. A study was conducted that included 16 warehouses in an observation group and 56 warehouses in a control group. These significant results help close the gap in the evidence.

Over the past century, the manufacturing industry has undergone a number of paradigm shifts: from the Ford assembly line (1900s) and its focus on efficiency to the Toyota production system (1960s) and its focus on effectiveness and JIDOKA; from flexible manufacturing (1980s) to reconfigurable manufacturing (1990s) (both following the trend of mass customization); and from agent-based manufacturing (2000s) to cloud manufacturing (2010s) (both deploying the value stream complexity into the material and information flow, respectively). The next natural evolutionary step is to provide value by creating industrial cyber-physical assets with human-like intelligence. This will only be possible by further integrating strategic smart sensor technology into the manufacturing cyber-physical value creating processes in which industrial equipment is monitored and controlled for analyzing compression, temperature, moisture, vibrations, and performance. For instance, in the new wave of the ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT), smart sensors will enable the development of new applications by interconnecting software, machines, and humans throughout the manufacturing process, thus enabling suppliers and manufacturers to rapidly respond to changing standards. This reprint of “Sense and Respond” aims to cover recent developments in the field of industrial applications, especially smart sensor technologies that increase the productivity, quality, reliability, and safety of industrial cyber-physical value-creating processes.
