Succédant à la science d'Aristote, de Ptolémée et de Galien, la science que nous appelons classique s'est déployée en Occident pendant plus de trois siècles, accompagnée, dans sa genèse, par la constitution d'une nouvelle raison. Le projet mécaniste et la mathématisation gouvernent désormais l'appréhension conjointe de la nature céleste et terrestre. Ils sont servis par de nouvelles méthodes centrées sur le couple ratio - experientia, le calcul et l'expérience : dès lors, calculer, mesurer, observer, déduire sont pratiqués de concert. Vouée à une application universelle, la science classique a suscité dans ses débuts des recherches peu conformes, nous semble-t-il aujourd'hui, à la mise en oeuvre d'une raison véritablement scientifique. Quel rôle l'expérience alchimique a-t-elle joué dans la méthode expérimentale ? Dans quelle mesure les spéculations mystiques sur les nombres ont-elles nourri la mathématisation de l'univers ? Comment expliquer que Kepler ait dressé des horoscopes et que Van Helmont ait cru fabriquer de l'or ? Autant de paradoxes qui invitent à se pencher sur le contexte et l'environnement conceptuel de la science classique. Regroupant en quatre parties plusieurs dizaines d'essais, ce Dictionnaire critique traite, dans un premier temps, des milieux, des réseaux et des institutions qui ont contribué à l'apparition de la science classique, ainsi qu'à sa diffusion. Il présente ensuite les acteurs principaux de cette révolution, puis analyse les concepts et les débats les plus caractéristiques : de l'infini à l'hermétisme en passant par les instruments, les atomes ou le mécanisme, ce sont autant de facettes, polies une à une, de la nouvelle science. Enfin, une quatrième partie décrit, de façon plus large, l'évolution des territoires du savoir, comme l'histoire naturelle ou l'homme, le mouvement ou la lumière, l'algèbre et la géométrie. Conduite par une équipe internationale de chercheurs, cette entreprise montre que, dans ses conquêtes et jusque dans ses égarements, la raison scientifique propre à la science classique, soucieuse de saisir la vérité des choses, a modelé la vision du monde des hommes du XXe siècle.

Precies in het begin van de moderne tijden, toen Europa de wereld koloniseerde en de wetenschappelijke kennis en vooruitgang in een stroomversnelling kwam, geraakte het Westen -paradoxaal genoeg- in de ban van de heksenwaan. Met de Heksenhamer -een handleiding voor heksenprocessen- in de aanslag werden in de 16e en 17e eeuw zogenaamde heksen, meestal vrouwen, op meedogenloze wijze en in grote getale terechtgesteld. De auteur schetst in het boek een beeld van de heksenvervolging op het territorium van (het toenmalige) Vlaanderen. Hij gaat na waar en hoe de terechtstellingen plaatsvonden, wie de slachtoffers en wie de daders waren, en welke motieven hebben meegespeeld bij het ontstaan van de heksenvervolgingen. Uit het verzamelde feitenmateriaal blijkt eens te meer dat ook in Vlaanderen veel meer vrouwen dan mannen het slachtoffer werden van de vervolgingen. De auteur belicht de misogyne en agressief antifeministische traditie die deze repressie ten aanzien van vrouwelijke heksen kan verklaren.

The suggestion for this collection of essays originated in part from a course given to graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In sections of this course, the conceptual developments in the fields of membrane transport and cellular respiration were traced to illustrate general aspects of the development of ideas in a scientific field.
