Abstract

This special issue of Voluntaris further develops the discussions conducted at the first academic conference on developmental voluntary work, which took place at Cologne’s University of Applied Sciences (TH Köln) in September 2018 to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the voluntary work programme ‘weltwärts’. This book provides an overview of the current state of research in this regard, with its contributions revealing which research findings are being discussed in politics and in practice and where further research is needed. This issue is edited by the conference’s team of organisers and consists of works by academic specialists in and those involved in the practical application of TH Köln’s research focus of informal education, representatives of the umbrella organisation ‘ventao’ (the Association of Developmental Exchange Organisations) and the editors of Voluntaris (the Journal for Volunteer Services and Civic Engagement).

Abstract

This book provides a picture of the abuse of older adults, organized by World Health Region and locating the problem within an area’s historic and present societal treatment of older persons. An actual and emblematic case study of the abuse of an older adult frames each chapter. Using the case study as a touchstone, each chapter guides the reader’s understanding of elder abuse in the region or country through the use of empirical data and research on the problem, explaining its usefulness and limitations as well as guiding frameworks utilized to address the problem. The book highlights the efforts of leading figures in each area or region who are addressing the problem, explaining existing policies and future initiatives to address the abuse of older adults. By providing a holistic and person-centered picture of the issue and problem of elder abuse, based on actual experiences as well as national and international statistics and research and politics and policy, this book is an invaluable resource for students, academics, social service practitioners, health professionals, law enforcement, and policymakers around the world.

Abstract

Social Widerspiegelung is a central area of human life, however, it has been little researched for the theorization of social work. Otger Autrata and Bringfriede Scheu present the foundations of social Widerspiegelung and establish the essential connection between social Widerspiegelung and subjective quality of life. This makes an important contribution to the development of social work theory: The basic research on social Widerspiegelung is linked to the tasks of social work in discipline and profession. The authors Otger Autrata is head of the research institute RISS in Feldkirchen in Carinthia. Bringfriede Scheu holds a professorship for the theory of social work in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programme in social work at the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract

This book discusses complex motivational conditions and strategies on macro, meso, and micro levels promoting reflectivity in interpersonal professional practice. The increasing demands made on practitioners in social and health services, as illustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, can lead to great uncertainty over how to find "the right response" to complex expressions of need and how to account for ethical professional decisions in view of prevailing strategies of 'risk reduction' and managerial accounting. Reflectivity has been recognised as being of central importance for guiding practitioners towards situationally differentiated and accountable practice. However, it is a complex process made up not only of different psychological components and their interplay with educational and organisational contexts, but also of multilevel interactions and purely situational conditions that can have positive or negative effects. The individual and team reflectivity can be learned and supported through various educational and managerial opportunities, sensitively guided personal and professional experiences and specific patterns of interaction which are reviewed in the book. Reflective supervision in the workplace plays a pivotal role in enabling individual and team reflective processes. However, there are also social and organisational factors that can hinder the development of individual and team reflectivity. The particular value of this publication is that the authors focus on complex research findings from several consecutive studies and critically review and discuss the conditions for reflectivity from various perspectives and with the background of rich academic literature and research. Their research-derived empirical and analytical insights were submitted to managers and educators, and effective and realistic strategies and methods to enhance different levels of reflectivity in students and practitioners were discussed and are summarised in this volume. Among the topics covered: The significance of reflectivity in professional social and health care in relation to changing socio-political contexts Gender aspects of reflectivity in the social and healthcare field Operationalisation of reflectivity for research by personal, team and organisational scales Cultural and communicational patterns of interaction enabling professional reflective processes Enhancing Professionality Through Reflectivity in Social and Health Care is pertinent reading for professors of professional academic training programmes for social workers, nurses, supervisors, trainers in non-formal learning settings, students, and managers of social and health services with an interest in enhancing organisational cultures.
