Research on small groups is highly diverse because investigators who study such groups vary in their disciplinary identifications, theoretical interests, and methodological preferences. The goal of this volume is to capture that diversity, and thereby convey the breadth and excitement of small group research by acquainting students with work on five fundamental aspects of groups. These are: group composition (the number and type of people who belong to the group); group structure (the status systems, norms, and roles that constrain interactions among group members); group conflict (arising from competition among members for scarce resources, both tangible and intangible); group performance (cooperative efforts among members to create joint products and achieve common goals); and group ecology (the physical, social, and temporal environments in which the group operates). Although these five aspects of groups are all important, they have not received equal research attention. In an effort to reflect this relative interest, more space has been devoted to conflict and performance than to composition, structure, and ecology. The volume also includes an introductory chapter by the editors which provides an overview of the history of and current state-of-the-art in the field. Together with introductions to each section, discussion questions and suggestions for further reading, make the volume an ideal text for senior undergraduate and graduate courses on group dynamics.

'The Social Psychology of Behaviour in Small Groups' covers classic theories of group behaviour and their application in organizational psychology. Topics include the structure and formation of groups and how individuals behave within a group, as well as more applied areas such as leadership, decision-making, co-operation and teamwork. Donald Pennington has provided a lively and accessible text suitable for undergraduates studying social psychology and those studying organizational psychology and business. The book is well illustrated and includes many mental exercises to engage the reader.

This book examines how intergroup biases, including subtle, contemporary forms of racism, can be combated. Specifically, the book begins by tracing how the challenges of addressing aversive racism, an indirect and typically unconscious type of racial bias, led to the development of the Common Ingroup Identity Model. This model outlines strategies for reducing biases that are rooted, in part, in fundamental, normal psychological processes, such as the categorization of people into in-groups, "we's who are favored," and out-groups, "they's who are not." Thus, changing the nature of categorization from in-groups and out-groups (e.g., on the basis of race) to one more common, inclusive identity (e.g., university affiliation or nationality) can harness the cognitive and motivational forces of ingroup favoritism and redirect them to reduce bias. This process, described by the Common Ingroup Identity Model, not only produces more positive intergroup attitudes and more inclusive and generous standards ofjustice and fairness but also increases positive and trusting intergroup behaviors, such as helping and personal disclosure. The book considers situations and interventions that can foster more inclusive representations and ways, both theoretically and practically, that a common ingroup identity can facilitate more harmonious intergroup relations.

'The Social Psychology of Inclusion and Exclusion' examines the psychology of inclusion and exclusion within relationships between individuals, small groups, and large scale social categories such as nationality and ethnicity. Leading international experts in social psychology explore the impact of being excluded on people's emotions, actions, and reactions. They examine the circumstances that surround social exclusion, the conditions that lead people to exclude others from their groups, and ways that the negative impact of social exclusion can be reduced. As well as setting out the latest theories and evidence, the contributors also address the practical and policy implications of their work. The coverage ranges from the ostracism of individuals within small groups; the impact of not belonging on emotions, thoughts and actions; the stigmatization of individuals who are rejected by society; the analysis of intergroup segregation and exclusion in Northern Ireland; the way that communication affects our images and openness to inclusion of ethnic outgroups; the way deviants are dealt with by other group members; and the role of social exclusion in delinquency. The volume will be of interest to social psychology researchers, as well as final year undergraduate students and graduate students on a variety of social psychology courses. Its breadth will also appeal to students of intercultural relations, sociology, political science, and even social and public policy. It will also serve as a useful resource for decision makers and social policy officials, and as a tool for social scientists who conduct research on social inclusion and exclusion.
