Focusing on changes in Western European banking from a functional perspective, this timely book fills a conspicuous gap in the literature. On the one hand, there are many single-country studies ; on the other, there are general directories ; but Gardener & Molyneux provide a systematic study, concentrating on current trends and developments, and covering the whole of Western Europe, including Scandinavia and the Mediterranean countries. Using the relevant historical context as a backdrop, the authors have drawn on a wide variety of contemporary sources, including research at the Institute of European Finance which has afforded access to materials and sources not normally available to researchers. Additionally, they have incorporated insights gained from extensive contacts with bankers throughout Europe. The book is divided into two parts. The main part of the text comprises twele chapters covering the most important banking sectors - such as retail, corporate, investment and international banking - and such related functional areas as structure, performance, regulation, changes in balance-sheet structure, financial centres and securities markets. The concluding chapter examines the broader, strategic implications of changes in European banking. The second part is a statistical and country appendix which briefly analyses the banking systems of 17 European countries. Having identified key areas of banking activity and areas of concern to banks, rather than simply documenting institutions and markets, the authors have provided a unique and comprehensive book that will be essential reading to those concerned with international and comparative banking, whether they be working in the industry itself or engaged in academic study or research.
