Abstract

Kengo Kuma, one of Japan's leading architects, has been combining professional practice and academia for most of his career. In addition to creating many internationally recognized buildings all over the world, he has written extensively about the history and theory of architecture. Like his built work, his writings also reflect his profound personal philosophy. Architecture of Defeat is no exception. Now available in English for the first time, the book explores events and architectural trends in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in both Japan and beyond. It brings together a collection of essays which Kuma wrote after disasters such as the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11 and the earthquake and tsunami that obliterated much of the built landscape on Japan's northern shore in a matter of minutes in 2011. Asking if we have been building in a manner that is too self-confident or arrogant, he examines architecture's intrinsic-and often problematic-relationship to the powerful forces of contemporary politics, economics, consumerism, and technology, as well as its vital ties to society. Despite the title, Architecture of Defeat is an optimistic and hopeful book. Rather than anticipating the demise of architecture, Kuma envisages a different mode of conceiving architecture: guided and shaped by more modesty and with greater respect for the forces of our natural world. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this is a fascinating insight into the thinking of one of the world's most influential architects.

Abstract

The third monograph of Japanese architect Jun Aoki, recently known for his widely published Louis Vuitton Matsuya Ginza facade renewal, covers roughly a decade of work. Beginning with the Aomori Museum of Art, the selection of works features a range of scales and functions, from which emerges a portrait of the architects philosophy and approach. Interestingly, Aoki chooses to present images of his built works in black and white, appended with detailed drawings and project data in a separate section. Several texts also intersperse the chronologically presented projects, which include Mitsue Primary School, Yeosu Expo Pavilion, BMW Art Car Collection, and more.

Abstract

The quintessential Japanese architect of today, Kengo Kuma has forged a modern design language that artfully combines the countrys traditional building crafts with sophisticated technologies and materials. Associating a deep understanding and respect for native construction techniques with a more globalized outlook than many of his compatriots, Kengo Kumas work represents a significant generational shift in a country rich with contemporary architecture. From his iconic Glass House (1995) to the Nezu Museum in Tokyo, this is the complete record of Kengo Kumas built work, comprising twentyfour projects to date. Architecture historian Kenneth Frampton frames Kumas work in the context of post-war Japans flourishing architecture scene and influential figures and offers a perspective on the international acclaim of Kumas ideas and buildings. Projects are organized by the material themes that have come to define the architects output: Water and Foliage; Wood; Bamboo and Grass; and Stone and Ceramics. Kuma develops a personal and architectural reflection on each. Each building is presented through descriptive text, newly commissioned photographs and detailed drawings, this last revealing a privileged view of the refined architectonic vocabulary that characterizes Kumas buildings. With the close collaboration of Kuma, this major monograph fully documents a leading light of the global architecture scene, offering a rich insight into contemporary interpretations of Japans ancient building traditions. This beautifully produced book will be an inspiration to any designer who aims to create spaces for history and the future.

Abstract

Thirty years after the original Japanese edition by Fumihiko Maki and a team from Maki and Associates, an English-language version of this book is finally available. The original was based on a commissioned study on The Desirable Living Environment and examined Japanese urban spaces in the context of Tokyos rapid change and the citys distinctive aesthetic consciousness. In particular, the concern for surface layers, micro-topographies, and small spaces in the metropolis received special focus. With the ever-growing and new global metropolises emerging today, fundamentally different attitudes toward public domains are revealed. It is clear that old ideas no longer apply.
