Be better, be more beautiful, perform better! Self-optimization is all the rage. What do theology and the church have to say about it? Should they issue a warning and strike up a cultural pessimistic tune? Maybe they could activate their own resources, which have the potential for discursive compatibility with phenomena of self-improvement. This study brings the discourse of enhancement into dialogue with the locus of healing in Calvin. Besser werden, schöner werden, leistungsfähiger werden! Selbstoptimierung liegt im Trend. Was haben Theologie und Kirche dazu zu sagen? Sollen sie den Mahnfinger heben und ein kulturpessimistisches Lied anstimmen?Oder sie könnten eigene Ressourcen aktivieren, die das Potential der diskursiven Kompatibilität mit Selbstverbesserungsphänomenen aufweisen.Dies versucht die vorliegende Arbeit und bringt den Enhancement-Diskurs aus Bioethik und Biomedizin in gegenwartshermeneutischer Absicht mit dem reformierten Lokus der Heiligung am Beispiel von Johannes Calvin ins Gespräch.Sie vertritt dabei die These, dass die Stärke und Aktualität von Calvins Theologie im Zusammendenken von Anspruch und Entlastung liegen. Sie wertschätzt die – auch verbessernde – Leistung des Menschen und kann dieselbe gleichzeitig als vollendet durch Gottes Wirken wissen.

Auf "angemaßte Heiligkeit" und Mordversuche lautete die Anklage in einem Inquisitionsprozess, der 1859 bis 1862 skandalöse Zustände im römischen Frauenkloster Sant Ambrogio ans Licht brachte. Mögliche Tatmotive waren Machtkämpfe, Eifersucht und die Vertuschung sexueller Beziehungen. Historiker, Theologen, Religionswissenschaftler und ein Psychiater ordnen den Fall in seine Zusammenhänge ein. Sie liefern einen Überblick über Heiligkeit in Religion und Kirche, zeichnen historische Unterscheidungen von "falscher" und "angemaßter" Heiligkeit nach und nehmen das 19. Jahrhundert als Zeitalter des Spiritismus und der Privatoffenbarungen in den Blick. Dabei geht es nicht zuletzt um die Verschränkung von Heiligkeit, Macht und Geschlechterrollen - und damit um ein dringendes Desiderat der Forschung. Cet ouvrage est consacré à la mort des souverains ou de ceux qui sont considérés comme des monarques même s’ils n’ont pas été couronnés. Certains sont bien connus – Constantin le Grand, Charles VI, Catherine de Médicis, Henri IV, Marie-Antoinette, Murat, Franco, Tito, etc., d’autres moins. Les approches sont autant littéraires – dans la représentation de la mort du prince et son idéalisation –, qu’historiques – dans l’événement que constituent le décès et son impact. Les funérailles conduisent les dépouilles apprêtées et souvent embaumées, exposées au public, ou représentées par leur effigie, à leur lieu d’ensevelissement, mausolées, nécropoles, églises selon un rituel bien défini où tous les acteurs ont leur place. Au contraire de la belle mort, les antifunérailles vouent les cadavres de ceux qui ont été puissants, souvent mutilés, parfois décapités, à l’infamie sur une place publique. Les rituels dépendent des circonstances, mort à la guerre ou suite d’une maladie, accident, exécution, assassinat, complot, crise de succession, publicité voulue de funérailles grandioses aux yeux du monde ou au contraire funérailles escamotées. L’écriture, qu’elle soit historiographique, hagiographique, rhétorique, journalistique ou même iconographique, joue un rôle primordial dans le récit de l’agonie, la commémoration, le dénigrement, la remémoration, l’héroïsation et la sanctification. Enfin, l’impact de la mort du prince s’inscrit dans l’histoire nationale et internationale, opposant le corps mortel au corps politique, la mort critique à la mort symbolique, le passé à l’avenir, l’après du pouvoir étant la question centrale.

Is the God of traditional theism logically incompatible with all the evil in the world? In his book, Is a Good God Logically Possible? (Palgrave paperback, 2019) James Sterba argues that the God of traditional theism is logically incompatible with especially the horrendous evil consequences of moral and natural evil that exists in our world.
