198 Wood Joints is an inventory. The book gathers many examples, from ordinary to rare, of wood joints presented in the form of axonometries. 198 Wood Joints is primarily a technical manual designed for woodworkers. But it is also a conceptual object that questions the very nature of the inventory in order to erode its foundations and undermine its reassuring objectivity. It is this collapse that the author describes in the afterword of the book. The first edition of this book was published in 2014 and quickly ran out of print, therefore in 2019 it was decided to republish an updated edition as the first publication of the newly established publishing house Architectural Notes.

Wood is the building material of the 21st century. Understanding the renewable raw material and its potential requires recognizing it in its ecological, technological and cultural-historical contexts. These are explored in the publication and presented with inspiring examples – practical and visionary. On this basis, the use of wood in architecture appears to be the order of the day, and Switzerland’s leading role in wood processing and building aesthetics is demonstrated in an international context. Authors from various disciplines create the content framework in which wood can be experienced sensually and its possibilities and limitations can be discussed. Touch Wood – Material, Architecture, Future is aimed at an engaged audience of experts and laypersons who want to enrich their experiences with knowledge and thus become actors in the promotion of wood in architecture. In addition to documenting exemplary buildings in accessible texts and with numerous illustrations, the publication also illuminates the many relationships that connect people with wood as a material.

Wood is suitable for use in multistorey building construction with barely any restrictions. This is new and requires creative rethinking of tried and tested practices in wood construction: classical categories can be replaced by mixed construction methods as necessary within a project, which yields completely new possibilities in designing wood structures. The Manual provides architects, engineers and wood specialists with the essential expertise on the new systematics and construction methodology, from the design to prefabrication to the implementation on site. It lays the grounds for mutual understanding among everyone involved in the project, to facilitate the necessary cooperation in the integral planning and construction process.

From small-scale thermal properties to large-scale forestry, territorial, and carbon cycle issues, wood has latent propensities not well addressed in the current discourse on wood construction. Through a range of design research formats - from material testing to in-situ documentation to speculative urban projects - this book articulates and illustrates future architectural and ecological potentials of wood. From under-considered thermal properties to emerging manufacturing possibilities to forestry regimes to larger ecosystem and carbon cycle dynamics, wood is uniquely positioned for ecological urbanization in the twenty-first century yet remains inadequately characterized in architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism. As the unique material properties of wood operate at multiple, simultaneous spatial and temporal scales - so should the discussions surrounding wood's role as a critical material for design today. This book brings into conversation scholars and practitioners who focus on wood from a range of perspectives - from the working forest to the mid-rise building to the cell itself. The aim is to examine the implications and potentials of wood urbanism, drawing particular focus to the complex relationships between land-use, wood production, and wood construction. While relying on the inherent intelligence and depth of multiple disciplines, a more totalizing thermodynamic perspective on the role of wood in contemporary buildings, urbanization, and territories is needed: from the unperceptively small to the unperceptively large.

Wood has a centuries-long tradition as well a huge potential for future use as a highly versatile building material. Crafting Wood: Structure and Expression presents newly gained knowledge on timber construction and on timber joints in particular. This book?lavishly illustrated with plans, sketches, and photographs?emerged from an international educational cooperation of the University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU in Trondheim, and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. The program treated a vast range timber joints from diverse theoretical and practical aspects. Students conceived and made by hand new joints that were then applied in prototypes for entire structures, designed also as part of the course, at a scale of 1:5. The volume analyzes this learning process and offers a new introduction to the topic of timber joints in architecture through text and images.

The worldwide booming timber construction sector and its rapid development beyond the limits of high-rise buildings demands high-performance materials, which are made possible by hardwood. Innovative production methods and manufacturing processes create economically competitive products that open up completely new possibilities for the construction sector - thanks to an almost forgotten building material. For it was not without reason that construction sector used predominantly hardwood until the 18th century. “Building with hardwood” focuses on its use in the supporting structure. The publication provides specialist knowledge for the safe handling of hardwood in building construction and shows successful examples of architecture from practice for practice. Hardwood plus point: ecological building material with resistant wood properties and high load-bearing capacity. Paradigm shift forest management: benefits for the construction sector. "Over the last three decades, timber architecture has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to the level of innovation, experimentation and environmental responsiveness it engenders. Designing Timber Buildings offers a comprehensive overview of timber as a construction material, in addition to practical design guidance. A series of ten exemplary case studies of award-winning timber building from around the world inform and inspire the design process. Topics covered include: the physical and mechanical properties of wood; preservative treatments; modified timber and engineered-timber products; environmental aspects of timber buildings and finally, structural systems and constructional techniques, including timber frame, structural insulated panels and cross-laminated timber. This book is richly illustrated throughout with detailed drawings and photographs documenting projects from construction to completion."
