Als Schuldige galten profitgierige "Spekulanten", denen unmoralische Geschäftsmethoden vorgeworfen wurden. Anhand zahlreicher Fallbeispiele - aus Frankfurt am Main, München, Hamburg, Köln und West-Berlin - untersucht Karl Christian Führer sowohl das konkrete Geschehen auf den Märkten für Grundstücke und Wohnraum als auch die zahlreichen Proteste gegen die "Spekulation" mit Immobilien, etwa durch Hausbesetzungen, bis 1985.
