Geschiedenisdidactiek is een handboek waarin de lespraktijk centraal staat. Het is bestemd voor geschiedenisdocenten in opleiding: studenten van hbo- en universitaire opleidingen. Maar ook professionals in de onderwijspraktijk kunnen dit boek goed gebruiken. Bij het boek is een website beschikbaar. Studenten vinden hier de illustratie uit een boek in kleur, audio- en videomateriaal en oefeningen; voor docenten zijn er lesvoorbeelden in PowerPoint. Deze herziene editie is geheel geactualiseerd. Er zijn recente onderzoeken verwerkt over historisch denken in het geschiedenisonderwijs en over denken over tijd. Daarnaast wordt aandacht besteed aan het werken met teksten (onder andere voor zwakke lezers), activerende didactiek en toetsing. In deze editie wordt nu expliciet rekening gehouden met zowel Nederlandse als Vlaamse gebruikers. Dit handboek voor de geschiedenisdocent (voor zowel basis- als voortgezet onderwijs) wil dat leerlingen geschiedenis zinvol leren vinden. Daartoe gaat deze didactiek in op de essenties van historisch denken en redeneren en hoe dat voor leerlingen betekenisvol kan worden. Geschiedenis moet verder leerbaar zijn. Geen onvoorstelbare hoeveelheid willekeurige gegevens, maar er moet structuur in zitten. Daarbij kan de leefwereld van de leerlingen niet altijd centraal staan, omdat ze nu juist andere leefwerelden moeten ontdekken. Naast deze fundamenten uit deel I gaat het in deel II om de vakdidactische hulpmiddelen die een geschiedenisdocent ten dienste staan: teksten en audiovisuele media. In deel III komen de lesopbouw en het lesplan aan de orde, de doelstellingen, de werkvormen en de evaluaties. Deze nieuwe editie is geheel herzien en geactualiseerd met nieuwe voorbeelden. Voorzien van illustraties in zwart-wit, eindnoten, een literatuuroverzicht en register. De auteurs hebben allen ervaring opgedaan als docent geschiedenis in het voortgezet onderwijs.

How is the Holocaust taught in schools ? How do students make sense of this challenging subject ? How are people affected by visits to Holocaust memorial sites ? Empirical research on teaching and learning about the Holocaust that tackles these and other questions has grown rapidly over the past fifteen years, a period marked by the professionalization and expansion of the field. In 2013, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) decided to carry out a study to establish a picture of this emerging field of research. A multilingual expert team mandated to collect and review research in fifteen languages identified nearly 400 studies resulting in more than 600 publications. Three years of work resulted in this book, which carries the field beyond anecdotal reflections and moral arguments. This systematic review includes research conducted in most IHRA Member Countries as well as several non-member countries. The multilingual focus of the project enables cross-cultural analyses and the transfer of knowledge between various regions and countries. The book's two parts present the research by language and by selected themes. This innovative transnational, translingual study reflects IHRA's core mission : to shape and advance teaching and learning about the Holocaust worldwide.

Teaching Chunks of Language is a motivating new resource book based on the fundamental assumptions of the so-called lexical (or 'chunk teaching') approach. Language as used by native speakers consists substantially of memorized multi-word chunks (e.g. by the way). For learners of a foreign language, knowledge of chunks is strongly associated with important aspects of proficiency such as oral fluency and naturalness of expression. The challenging question for foreign learners therefore is this: How can many chunks be committed to active, long-term memory? Teaching Chunks of Language suggests a communicative approach to the teaching of chunks of language. Most of the activities presented are decidedly communicative and involve a lot of speaking and listening as well as intensive reading and some writing.

The new edition of The Child as Musician: A Handbook of Musical Development celebrates celebrates the richness and diversity of the many different ways in which children can engage in and interact with music. It presents theory - both cutting edge and classic - in an accessible way for readers by surveying research concerned with the development and acquisition of musical skills. The focus is on musical development from conception to late adolescences, although the bulk of the coverage concentrates on the period when children are able to begin formal music instruction (from around age 3) until the final year of formal schooling (around age 18). There are many conceptions of how musical development might take place, just as there are for other disciplines and areas of human potential. Consequently, the publication highlights the diversity in current literature dealing with how we think about and conceptualise children's musical development. Each of the authors has searched for a better and more effective way to explain in their own words and according to their own perspective, the remarkable ways in which children engage with music. In the field of educational psychology there are a number of publications that survey the issues surrounding child and adolescent development. Some of the more innovative present research and theories, and their educational implications, in a style that stresses the fundamental interplay among the biological, environmental, social and cultural influences at each stage of a child's development.
