Des circulations nationales bien connues, les migrations évoluent aujourd'hui massivement vers des mobilités transnationales. Ces transmigrants réalisent, souvent pour des firmes multinationales, une part non négligeable de la mondialisation des échanges " par le bas ". Les qualités requises de ces " fourmis " de l'économie souterraine concernent le savoir circuler, le savoir passer les frontières, le savoir faire réseau, plutôt que l'intégration des normes et des valeurs de telle ou telle nation. Dès lors apparaissent, en Europe et dans le monde, des territoires originaux, comme superposés aux découpages politiques contemporains, articulés aux villes qu'ils commencent à transformer, et connectés aux principaux lieux des trafics criminels. Alain Tarrius, qui depuis des années a mis ces populations au cœur de son œuvre sociologique, livre ici le résultat d'une enquête de terrain auprès de deux populations emblématiques des grandes migrations contemporaines : les Afghans et les Marocains, à l'est et à l'ouest de la Méditerranée.
