The Norman Foster Foundation presents the introductory volume of 'Norman Foster Sketchbooks 1975-2020', a new series reflecting Foster's career from the 1970s until nowadays, through his personal sketchbooks. 'Norman Foster is a born draughtsman, specially gifted for sketching, and his drawings are particularly brilliant in their capacity for synthesis.' describes Jorge Sainz. As he puts it, 'His graphism has certainly evolved through time, but it maintains that economy of means characteristic of people who, besides a good hand for drawing, have very clear ideas.' Edited by Jorge Sainz, Norman Foster Sketchbooks 1975-2020 is the introductory title from a compilation of several volumes that will follow the work of Norman Foster in chronological decades, with two volumes published each year. The architectural sketchbook is a place where a particular kind of drawing happens; it is something very personal, reflective and portable. Through the sketches, drawings and notes, readers can trace how Foster's complex concepts are made manifest and develop on paper. This introductory volume of the Norman Foster Foundation's Sketchbooks series presents more than 546 drawings, making this a comprehensive collection of Foster's sketchbook drawings from which he offers insights into the design process of not only his most influential projects but also of his inspirations.

For more than ten years, the celebrated artist Per Arnoldi of Copenhagen has been working together with the world famous London architect Norman Foster. Arnoldi's contributions range from posters of Foster's buildings to targeted chromatic interventions in interior spaces to the complex total "chromatic concept" for a massive new structure. His color choices serve to create atmosphere and also guide the user clearly through the space. This book provides systematic and detailed documentation of this entire collaborative spectrum. Projects include: the Commerzbank in Frankfurt, the Reichstag in Berlin, the Imperial College in London, HM Treasury in London, the National Police Monument in London, the Arag Tower in Düsseldorf, the World Port Center in Rotterdam, and Decaux's headquarters in London. The photographs were taken specially for this book to capture the specific qualities of the interplay between space and color.
