This monograph interprets Sermones book 1 as a collection of Horace's credentials for Maecenas and traces his efforts in getting accepted as an associate of the latter after his miscalculation in joining Brutus. Although Horace regularly reflects on his poetic orientation and standards of good poetry, his primary objective was his self-presentation. The volume also examines his commentary on contemporary socio-political themes.

The lucky discovery in Athens of the letters of Luzi, Traverso and Macrí to Margherita Dalmati allowed to complete the epistolary of the Greek poet and harpsichordist preserved in the archives of Florence and Urbino. The 341 pieces available thanks to Sara Moran's research allow us to trace her contacts with the great protagonists of post-war literary Florence, also showing their links with the Roman and Milanese environment. Throughout the "thaw" years, the letters offer the reconstruction of Dalmati' militancy in Cyprus' struggle for independence, of her friendship with Cristina Campo, of the translations into neo-Greek of Luzi's poetry. The 60s and 70s are marked by her promotion of Italian poetry in Greece, and of Greek poetry in Italy, through collaboration with magazines and the translation for Einaudi, together with Nelo Risi, of Kavafi's poems. The letters - tender, funny, ironic and affectionate - of the four voices involved in the book illuminate important moments of the culture of the second half of the 20th Century as well as of the protagonists' life, while among and around all of them an enchanting woman with her musical voice can be admired, whose name was little known until now.

Research into social behaviour in animals has often focused on aggression, yet members of social species are far more likely to interact with each other in a positive way. Animal Friendships explores non-sexual bonding behaviours in a range of mammalian and avian species. Through analysis of factors which trigger and deepen friendships, Dagg uncovers a world of intricate and complex social interactions. These factors include sources of food, formation of coalitions, playdates for infants, mutual grooming and the apparent pleasure of simple companionship. Chapters cover different types of friendship: from those between two individuals, such as male-female or parent-offspring friendships, to those within family groups and even inter-species friendships. Not only does the book explore how and why friendships form, it also showcases the ingenious field techniques used by researchers enabling the reader to understand the scientific methodology. An invaluable read for both researchers and students studying animal social bonding.

"The Waves is one of the greatest achievements in modern literature. Commonly considered the most important, challenging and ravishingly poetic of Virginia Woolf's novels, it was in her own estimation 'the most complex and difficult of all my books'. This edition will be the most authoritative, most fully collated and annotated text available to scholars to date, and for considerable time to come. It maps the text of The Waves from the first British edition to all other editions published in Woolf's lifetime, as well as to all extant proofs. The text is presented in clearly readable form, with page-by-page direction to emendation, variants, and notes. The substantial introduction includes a detailed account of the novel's composition, publication and early critical reception. There are extensive explanatory notes on the text, a full chronology of composition and publication and a more general chronology covering Woolf's life and works"--Provided by publisher.

Those long summer days and weekends spent with our best friends can be among the happiest memories of childhood. But the art of making friends isn't a skill that is taught in most schools. Teaching children how to be good friends and cultivate healthy friendships is the work of parents, teachers, coaches, ministers, and caring adults. InHow to Be a Friend: A Book about Friendship ... Just for Me!, author, Molly Wigand, introduces children to those values that make for good friendships--loyalty, trust, and honesty--and to how they can become a good friend to others.
