Abstract

"This book presents a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment that combines individual case formulation with group interventions informed by contemporary psychodynamic and interpersonal theories. Designed as a manual for training and teaching, this book shows how group psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy (GPIP) practitioners combine knowledge of the interpersonal factors that underlie each patient's symptoms, with a sound understanding of group process theory and stages of group development, to effect real and lasting change. Chapters include a wealth of hands-on tools including practice guides, self-study quizzes, clinical vignettes, and reflective questions. The authors also provide instructions on process and progress monitoring, which allows therapists to access timely feedback about the functioning of the group and each patient, improving their outcomes by highlighting what is working and what needs to change"--

Abstract

"The development of community methods of treatment implies the wider application of the social sciences, mainly sociology and anthropology, to existing psychiatric practice. War-time needs with the huge volume of psychiatric cases and relative shortage of psychiatrists gave a tremendous stimulus to social methods of treatment in psychiatry; but probably more important is the changing cultural pattern in Britain. It appears to us that, in this country at least, the community is to-day assuming social responsibilities which would not have been contemplated a generation ago. This growth of a social conscience goes much deeper than the political changes which have occurred during recent years, although these are themselves a manifestation of social change. This book is a report on the work of a unit which was organized to study and develop community methods of treatment. Many different factors led to its inception. The inquiry really started ten years ago when a trend towards group treatment and studies of the patient community-appeared in British psychiatry; these trends were developed by Army psychiatrists and psychologists and by the Emergency Medical Service of the Ministry of Health; the experiments at Mill Hill and Dartford (both Ministry of Health hospitals) which are briefly described in this book, were forerunners of the present Industrial Neurosis Unit at Belmont Hospital which was started in April 1947"--Introduction. Abstract

Abstract

"One method is the therapeutic community technique of social psychiatry, which, by bringing the patients into cooperation with the staff and with each other on problems of ward management, helps fill the gap while it also opens up new possibilities for therapy through social interactions. Wide use of this plan, I believe, would significantly help in solving the problem which otherwise, with the staff functioning in traditional roles, seems hopeless of solution. The purpose of this book, therefore, is not to urge the Oakland program as a "model" for the mental hospital, but rather to report a scientific and human experiment as dispassionately as possible, to define, classify, and describe, to isolate certain significant elements of the structure and process, and to subject them to such methods of evaluation as are on hand at this time. This is what was done, this is what happened, and this is how we conceived of what happened. Many of my inferences will surely turn out to be in error, but many will probably be valid. For the most part--since this was an operational, rather than a laboratory research project--I urge the reader to consider my findings as hunches. At this stage of psychology, sociology, and my own branch of medicine, and with the tools we had to work with, one could hardly ask for more. And this in itself was no small task"--Preface. Abstract

"The subject of this book is the relatively new and rapidly developing field of group psychotherapy: its origins, methods, importance, and future. It was written to acquaint the layman and the specialist in allied fields with the nature of this form of treatment. Possibly, the book will also help some readers prepare for the reality of the experience. The book subordinates theoretical concepts and techniques to impressions of human beings working together. The author focuses primarily on the words and feelings of those who search for new meanings to old experiences and re-direct their lives through corrective relationships formed within the therapy circle. The author tries to give characteristic glimpses into the emotional development of clients by indicating how they appeared at various stages of the therapeutic relationship, both in individual and group therapy. The author also reveals what went through his own mind while he treated these clients"--Preface.

Abstract

Foreword / Bernard Holland -- Preface -- Introduction -- The development, structure, and therapeutic use of group behavior -- The dynamics of group therapy -- The group contract -- The psychodynamics of separation : its relationship to group therapy reality events and the termination of group therapy -- Silence and acting out in group therapy -- An illustrative analysis of an outpatient group -- Group therapy in schizophrenia, manic-depressive and chronic psychotic depressive reactions -- Hospital ward meetings : a therapeutic group activity. "The purpose of this book is to present the theory, dynamics, and technique of one model of group therapy--a model based on the psychodynamic understanding of human group behavior. This model is not, of course, the first to employ psychodynamic methodology. An examination of the literature on group therapy reveals many theories and techniques that purport to be psychodynamic. Unfortunately, few studies explain in detail just how psychodynamic methodology may be therapeutically used in a group situation. This book proposes to do just that. The author recognizes that there are still many unanswered questions about group therapy in general and even about this model in particular, and that a great need exists for properly controlled research. However, instead of attempting to resolve all the conflicting claims or to offer a definitive analysis of group therapy--a task clearly beyond the scope of one book or study--the present work is offered merely as a primer on the subject. Professional personnel interested in group therapy can profit from the understanding of the dynamics of group relationships and their application to the model of group therapy here presented. The principles outlined in these pages may be adapted to psychology or social work studies as well as psychiatry"--

Abstract

A republication of Moreno's 1932 monograph on group psychotherapy. The author introduces his republication through a personal interview. He outlines his current thinking as well as the principles of group psychotherapy. The remaining portion of the text is devoted to the application of the group process to a prison population. There is a description of the spontaneity test, of classification schemes, symmetric relations, and "complexes." The addenda contain an evaluation of the group plan by eminent leaders in psychology and psychiatry. Moreno concludes that it is possible "to develop an exact science of group organization, a sociometry." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved).
