An exhaustive inventory of fortified residences is compared here to written evidence, figurative representations and fieldwork. It retraces the evolution of seigneurial residences of the Xth to XVth centuries. These elements are reinsered into the domaine and social context thanks to the drawing up of unpublished genealogies. In this imposing work a continual contact is maintained between past and present outlining the progress of archaeological research. Actual problems such as the protection of this threatened heritage are also evoked here.

The chateau of Fontainebleau, transformed into a magnificent palace during the reign of François Ier, was the birthplace of many of the greatest artistic innovations of the French Renaissance. The highly wrought, ornate decoration conceived for the interiors by the italian artists Rosso Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio would have a profound effect ont he course of french art. the prints that were produced at the palace in the 1540s, which are the subjects of this book, became one of the main vehicles for the dissemination of this Fontainebleau style thourghout France and beyond. This extarodinary body of work - known collectively as the School of Fontainebleau - provides a precious record of the designs by Rosso and Primaticcio that otherwise would have been lost and of the rich array of graphic material that circulated in the palace's workshops. The term School of Fontainebleau, first coined by Adam Bartsch two centuries ago, has come to encompass prints by a wide variety of artists and of disparate styles, some of them only tenuously linked to the art executed at the French court. A principal aim of Volume I is to define more precisely the corpus of prints produced in a workshop at Fontainebleau, shedding light on the contributions of individual makers and their working practices. It is demonstrated that a relatively unified workshop was active at or near the palace between about 1542 and 1547, populated not only by the more well-known printmakers such as Léon Davent and Antonio Fantuzzi, but also by an important group of anonymous artists and monogrammists. This study adopts a technical approach to the material, including analysis of paper, draftsmanship, and printing techniques, which yields a significant amournt of new material and attributions and allows for a clearer understanding of this intriguing group of prints. Volume II and III provide a fully illustrated catalogue of the 440 prints attributed to the School. Brief entries accompany the catalogues of prints by Davent, Fantuzzi and Mignon, which give summary information on sources and related works, including early copies. The catalogues devoted to the lesser-known monogrammists and anonymous hands, whose works constitute about a third of the total workshop production, contain full descriptive entries.
