In what ways have colonial and postcolonial studies transformed our perceptions of early modern European texts and images? How have those perceptions enriched our broader understanding of the colonial and the postcolonial? Focusing on English, Portuguese, Spanish and French colonial projects, Shankar Raman explains how encounters with new worlds and peoples irrevocably shaped both Europeans and their 'others'. There are in-depth case studies on: the Portuguese drama and epic of Gil Vicente and Luis Vaz de Camões; travel narratives and exotic engravings from Theodore de Bry's influential compilations; and the English plays and verse of Christopher Marlowe, John Donne and Richard Brome.

Renaissance Papers is a collection of the best scholarly essays submitted each year to the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. The conference accepts papers on all subjects relating to the Renaissance - music, art, history, literature, etc. - from scholars all over North America and the world. Of the ten essays in the 2003 volume, three have to do with Shakespeare; among the topics here are Shakespeare and social uprising in 'The Merchant of Venice', politics and masculinity in 'Julius Caesar', and the churching of women in 'Taming of the Shrew'; another essay on Renaissance drama focuses attention on Elizabeth Cary's 'Mariam.' Other essays consider Erasmus and the problem of strife, George Puttenham as a comedic artificer, the hermeneutics of William Tyndale, the editorial disputes in The Adventures of Master F.J., the wooing of Amoret and Scudamour, and the 'writing' of the Virginia Company. Contributors: Jessica Wolfe, Gerald Snare, Jon Pope, Elizabeth Watson, Wayne Erickson, Mary Free, Amy Scott, Aaron Landau, Jeanne Roberts, and Jay Stubblefield. M. Thomas Hester is professor of English, and Christopher Cobb is assistant professor of English, both at North Carolina State University.

This book depicts the Early Modern book markets in Europe and colonial Latin America. The nature of book production and distribution in this period resulted in the development of a truly international market. The integration of the book market was facilitated by networks of printers and booksellers, who were responsible for the connection of distant places, as well as local producers and merchants. At the same time, due to the particular nature of books, political and religious institutions intervened in book markets. Printers and booksellers lived in a politically fragmented world where religious boundaries often shifted. This book explores both the development of commercial networks as well as how the changing institutional settings shaped relationships in the book market.
