Abstract

Abstract

"This volume proposes a framework for reflection on practices of writing personal names in medieval sacred spaces, uniting historians, art historians, and specialists in written culture (both epigraphers and palaeographers). It traces the forms and functions of names that can be found within the space of early medieval churches and cemeteries, focusing mainly, but not solely, on inscriptions. By examining names written in various kinds of media, from liturgical books to graffiti and more formal inscriptions, the contributors investigate the intentions and effects of the act of writing one?s own name or having one's name written down. Their interest resides less in the name itself than the interactions it had with its spatial, iconographic, linguistic, ritual, and cultural context, and what this indicates about medieval graphical practices. What is a name from a graphic point of view? What are the specificities of the epigraphic manifestations of names? By whom were names written, and for whom were they intended (if they were even meant to be accessed)? Addressing these and other questions, this volume shows the importance of inscriptions as historical sources and the contribution they give to the study of medieval societies at the intersection of history, anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and semiology."-- Back cover.

Abstract

"L'orientation vers les convergences, échanges et confrontations dans l'histoire monastique du grand Ouest européen au Moyen Âge permet de porter un regard nouveau sur la dynamique de divers établissements en observant les relations qui s'y sont développées tant au sein des communautés, qu'avec la société environnante. Les influences externes subies par les monastères et les conflits internes qui s'y jouent, les échanges dus aux pèlerinages, aux rouleaux des morts et aux confraternités sont au nombre des thèmes explorés."--

Abstract

In the context of the intense religious and social renewal known as "Gregorian Reform", the Camaldoli Hermitage and the Vallombrosa Abbey, both located in the Tuscan territory, gave rise to two movements of reform inspired by the spirituality of the respective founders, which later became congregations belonging to the benedictine family. Motivated by common instances, the Camaldolese and the Vallombrosan Orders were similar in some of their essential features and in the dynamics of their expansion. This statement has been the starting point of this work, which aims to formulate a comparative overview of the territorial spread of these reforms in Tuscany, by recording the known settlements and making an inventory of the religious communities interested by this phenomenom, in order to gather a broad range of examples of the way these movements interacted with the local situations in the different areas of the region. The text is enriched by a carthographic appendix illustrating the chronology of these congregations' development in medieval Tuscany.

Abstract

This international and interdisciplinary collection discusses a wide range of aspects relating to the material and devotional culture of the Dominican Order across medieval Europe. The Order of Preachers has famously bred some of the leading intellectual lights of the Middle Ages. While Dominican achievements in theology, philosophy, languages, law, and sciences have attracted much scholarly interest, their significant engagement with liturgy, the visual arts, and music remains relatively unexplored. These aspects and their manifold interconnections form the focal point of this interdisciplinary volume. The different chapters examine how early Dominicans positioned themselves and interacted with their local communities, where they drew their influences from, and what impact the new Order had on various aspects of medieval life. The contributors to this volume address issues as diverse as the making and illustrating of books, services for a king, the disposition of liturgical space, the creation of new liturgies, and a Dominican-made music treatise. In doing so, they seek to shed light on the actions and interactions of medieval Dominicans in the first centuries of the Order's existence.

Abstract

At the suggestion of the Benedictine, Cistercian and Trappist communities of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, the 10th International Colloquium (May 19-21, 1980) organized by the Instituut voor Middeleeuwse Studies was devoted to the commemoration of the 15th Centenary of the birth of St. Benedict of Nursia. It was clear to the editors of the present collection of essays that only select aspects of the manifold cultural and economic life of these monastic communities could be presented in a single volume. Nevertheless it was hoped that the reader might intuit the constant evolution and adaptation to altered social circumstances characteristic of the Benedictine communities, and thus participate in the process of discovery shared by members of the Colloquium. To enhance this sense of discovery and to suggest the continuing Benedictine contribution during the following epoch, the editors accepted a final study, which of course extends beyond the strict chronological limits of the volume.
