Abstract

The book is designed to serve as a textbook for courses offered to upper-undergraduate students enrolled in physics. The first edition of this book was published in 2014. As there is a demand for the next edition, it is quite natural to take note of the several advances that have occurred in the subject over the past five years and to decide which of these are appropriate for inclusion at the textbook level, given the fundamental nature and the significance of the subject area. This is the prime motivation for bringing out a revised second edition. Among the newer mechanisms and materials, the book introduces the super-continuum generation, which arises from an excellent interplay of the various mechanisms of optical nonlinearity. The topics covered in this book are quantum mechanics of nonlinear interaction of matter and radiation, formalism and phenomenology of nonlinear wave mixing processes, optical phase conjugation and applications, self-focusing and self-phase modulation and their role in pulse modification, nonlinear absorption mechanisms, and optical limiting applications, photonic switching and bi-stability, and physical mechanisms leading to a nonlinear response in a variety of materials. This book has emerged from an attempt to address the requirement of presenting the subject at the college level. This textbook includes rigorous features such as the elucidation of relevant basic principles of physics; a clear exposition of the ideas involved at an appropriate level; coverage of the physical mechanisms of non-linearity; updates on physical mechanisms and emerging photonic materials and emphasis on the experimental study of nonlinear interactions. The detailed coverage and pedagogical tools make this an ideal textbook for students and researchers enrolled in physics and related courses.

Abstract

This book offers the reader a practical guide to the control and characterization of laser diode beams.  Laser diodes are the most widely used lasers, accounting for 50% of the global laser market.  Correct handling of laser diode beams is the key to the successful use of laser diodes, and this requires an in-depth understanding of their unique properties. Following a short introduction to the working principles of laser diodes, the book describes the basics of laser diode beams and beam propagation, including Zemax modeling of a Gaussian beam propagating through a lens.  The core of the book is concerned with laser diode beam manipulations: collimating and focusing, circularization and astigmatism correction, coupling into a single mode optical fiber, diffractive optics and beam shaping, and manipulation of multi transverse mode beams.  The final chapter of the book covers beam characterization methods, describing the measurement of spatial and spectral properties, including wavelength and linewidth measurement techniques.  The book is a significantly revised and expanded version of the title Laser Diode Beam Basics, Manipulations and Characterizations by the same author. New topics introduced in this volume include: laser diode types and working principles, non-paraxial Gaussian beam, Zemax modeling, numerical analysis of a laser diode beam, spectral property characterization methods, and power and energy characterization techniques.  The book approaches the subject in a practical way with mathematical content kept to the minimum level required, making the book a convenient reference for laser diode users.

Abstract

Optics has recently evolved into one of the most flourishing fields in physics, with photonics finding increasing application in products such as optical thermometers, camera monitors and LED lighting, plus numerous military applications. This book covers the geometrical aspects of optics, the fundamental level of understanding the technology. Beginning with how light is generated and how fast it travels, the book discusses how materials interact with light, how various materials affect the velocity of light, and the ramifications of change in the speed of light. The concept of the index of refraction, and how it is used with Snell's law to produce image forming systems, is developed. An ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate level courses in geometrical optics, this book will also interest those wanting to learn the concepts and theory of geometrical optics. Each chapter contains worked examples, and there are exercises to reinforce the reader's understanding of material.

Abstract

This book gives a compact overview about actual research in the field of Electromagnetics and Network Theory and its Microwave Applications. It contains aspects on antennas and wave propagation, microwave- and communication-systems and methods for the numerical modeling of components, networks and structures being part of these systems. An actual state of research in antennas and propagation is given as well as wave propagation in RF-lines and electric networks which are crucial for the investigation of microwave systems like radar-, radio-location- and communication- systems. Especially in mobile applications, radar- , radio-location- and navigation- systems as well as microwave sensors are more and more in use. Therefore an actual state of research in this field is given. Actual results of research on such systems are shown for automotive radar, a high precision radio-location-system, RF-sensors and RF-measurement technologies. The wide field of communication systems is further discussed where an overview about progress in mobile communication and wireless data transmission is given and results of actual research are shown. At last, actual numerical methods are discussed which are essential for the estimation of electromagnetic effects in all the applications shown previously. In the scope between the treatment of very tiny structures and very large structures new ways are shown for the numerical modeling of the electromagnetic field in nanostructures as well as in macrostructures and large periodic structures. The book is dedicated to Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Peter Russer and his research work which is shown in his autobiography.

Abstract

This book presents an in-depth treatment of routing and wavelength assignment for optical networks, and focuses specifically on quality-of-service and fault resiliency issues. It reports on novel approaches for the development of routing and wavelength assignment schemes for fault-resilient optical networks, which improve their performance in terms of signal quality, call blocking, congestion level and reliability, without a substantial increase in network setup cost. The book first presents a solution for reducing the effect of the wavelength continuity constraint during the routing and wavelength assignment phase. Further, it reports on an approach allowing the incorporation of a traffic grooming mechanism with routing and wavelength assignment to enhance the effective channel utilization of a given capacity optical network using fewer electrical-optical-electrical conversions. As a third step, it addresses a quality of service provision scheme for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-based optical networks. Lastly, the book describes the inclusion of a tree-based fault resilience scheme in priority-based dispersion-reduced wavelength assignment schemes for the purpose of improving network reliability, while maintaining a better utilization of network resources. Mainly intended for graduate students and researchers, the book provides them with extensive information on both fundamental and advanced technologies for routing and wavelength assignment in optical networks. The topics covered will also be of interest to network planners and designers.
