À un « moment où les groupes de recherche universitaire dédiés à l’étude de la littérature missionnaire se multiplient dans l’espace francophone » (Claude Prudhomme), le besoin s’est fait sentir d’un instrument commun pour mieux comprendre le phénomène de la diffusion et de l’inculturation du christianisme sans cesse renouvelé depuis vingt siècles, les missions ayant été en quelque sorte « un des premiers agents de globalisation » (Alberto Melloni). Éditée par Karthala, la revue Histoire, monde et cultures religieuses (anciennement Histoire & Missions Chrétiennes) a été créée en 2007 dans ce but par l’Association des chercheurs de la revue « Histoire et Missions Chrétiennes » érigée en association Loi 1901. S’il fallait résumer de façon schématique ce qui est au cœur du projet de HMC, nous pourrions en décliner la méthode en trois points : Une discipline scientifique : l’histoire, mais dans l’interdisciplinarité ; Un champ spécifique : les missions chrétiennes, mais au sens large ; Un choix : publier en français, mais traduit du monde entier. HMC ne s’intéresse pas uniquement à l’histoire contemporaine (XIXe-XXIe siècles) mais à tout l’arc temporel et spatial de la diffusion du christianisme à travers l’histoire, des origines à nos jours et dans tous les continents (y compris l’Europe), à raison de quatre numéros par an. L’histoire n’est pas que la poussière du passé, et on ne s’y intéresse, dans le fond, qu’en raison des questions qui taraudent notre présent : en font partie la question des religions du monde et celle du rapport des religions entre elles. Ce qui s’est passé depuis vingt siècles à travers les missions chrétiennes pourrait-t-il donc nous donner à penser pour aujourd’hui et pour demain ? C’est ce que nous croyons à Histoire, monde et cultures religieuses.

American society is rapidly secularizing-a radical departure from its historically high level of religiosity-and politics is a big part of the reason. Just as, forty years ago, the Religious Right arose as a new political movement, today secularism is gaining traction as a distinct and politically energized identity. This book examines the political causes and political consequences of this secular surge, drawing on a wealth of original data. The authors show that secular identity is in part a reaction to the Religious Right. However, while the political impact of secularism is profound, there may not yet be a Secular Left to counterbalance the Religious Right. Secularism has introduced new tensions within the Democratic Party while adding oxygen to political polarization between Democrats and Republicans. Still there may be opportunities to reach common ground if politicians seek to forge coalitions that encompass both secular and religious Americans.

The Dutch Reformed Church, it was said in apartheid South Africa, was the National Party at prayer, and indeed, given that the Bible was so fundamental to much of the legislation that governed the apartheid state, that apparently satirical description had the ring of truth. 'Religion in South Africa's past', writes Dhammamegha Annie Leatt has been 'saturated by politics' and politics 'saturated by religion'. So how, she asks, was it possible for a new state to found itself without religious authority? Why did the churches give up so much of their political role in the transition? How can we think about tradition and the customary in relation to secularism? How can we not? In The State of Secularism Leatt guides the reader from a history of global political secularism through an exploration of the roles played by religion and traditional authority in apartheid South Africa to the position of religion in the post-apartheid state. She analyses the negotiations relating to religion in the constitution-making process, arguing, that South Africa is both secular in its Constitution and judicial foundations and increasingly non-secular in its embrace of traditional authorities and customary law. In the final chapter Leatt turns her attention to post-apartheid South Africa, examining changing relationships between churches and the ruling African National Congress and the increasing influence of traditional leaders and evangelical Christians in an anti-liberal alliance. This book makes a tremendous contribution to the literature on postcolonial politics on the African continent. It has wonderful insights into the founding of a constitutional democracy in South African and will appeal to students in history, politics, sociology and anthropology and constitutional law.
