Abstract

The organization of production in value chains has permitted manufacturers and retailers alike to establish internationalproduction networks geographically dispersed changing thenature of production and employment relations in the globaleconomy. This transition has produced several transformations in food and agriculture and has resulted in the emergenceof retailers as big buyers in the global agro-food system.

Abstract

“Whoever controls Central Asia controls the world” saidHalford Mackinder, the English father of geopolitics. He was looking at the world at the beginning of the 20th century, whenthe British Empire reached its apogee. It is ironic then that, only a few decades after he developed his ideas, great powers would almost forget about Central Asia and turn their attention back to the Middle East. The reasons? History, geography, and the discovery of vast hydrocarbon resources.Over the past century, it has been an almost constant refrain:as great and middle powers rise, they will almost invariably look at the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It was therefore to be expected that, with the world’s economic andpolitical centre of gravity moving increasingly towards East and South Asia, a number of countries in these regions would devote more attention to the MENA region. China and India, inparticular, have been at the forefront of an astonishing rise, astheir GDP has grown respectively fourteen-fold and six-fold, ata constant rate, between 1990 and 2019, with China climbingfrom the eleventh to the second largest economy in the world, and India from the thirteenth to the fifth. With the unfoldingof this monumental change, MENA countries have started to“look East” more and more and with a keener interest, alsowith an eye to rebalancing the influence and interference of“classical” non-regional actors such as the United States, Russia and a number of European countries (especially former colonial powers).

Abstract

This book provides a comparative and transnational examination of the complex and multifaceted experiences of anti-labour mobilisation, from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. It retraces the formation of an extensive market for corporate policing, privately contracted security and yellow unionism, as well as processes of professionalisation in strikebreaking activities, labour espionage and surveillance. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era. -- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"Global news on anthropogenic climate change is shaped by international politics, scientific reports and voices from transnational protest movements. This timely volume asks how local communities engage with these transnational discourses. Looking at communities from Greenland to Tanzania, it illuminates how different understandings evolve in diverse cultural and geographical contexts while also revealing some common patterns of how people make sense of climate change. This book is a valuable resource to those studying climate and science communication; those interested in understanding the various roles played by journalism, NGOs, politics and science in shaping public understandings of climate change, as well as those exploring the intersections of the global and the local in debates on the sustainable transformation of societies." - Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Accounting for the astonishing developments in the field of Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology, this second edition has been updated and substantially expanded. Starting with the description of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this cogently written textbook introduces the reader to the astronomy of galaxies, their structure, active galactic nuclei, evolution and large scale distribution in the Universe. After an extensive and thorough introduction to modern observational and theoretical cosmology, the focus turns to the formation of structures and astronomical objects in the early Universe. The basics of classical astronomy and stellar astrophysics needed for extragalactic astronomy are provided in the appendix. The new edition incorporates some of the most spectacular results from new observatories like the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, Herschel, ALMA, WMAP and Planck, as well as new instruments and multi-wavelength campaigns which have expanded our understanding of the Universe and the objects populating it. This includes new views on the galaxy population in the nearby Universe, on elliptical galaxies, as well as a deeper view of the distant Universe approaching the dark ages, and an unprecedented view of the distant dusty Universe. Schneider also discusses the impressive support for the standard model of the Universe, which has been substantially strengthened by recent results, including baryon acoustic oscillations (an approach which has significantly matured over the years), results from the completed WMAP mission and from the first Planck results, which have confirmed and greatly improved on these findings, not least by measuring the gravitational lensing effect on the microwave background. Further, a new chapter focusing on galaxy evolution illustrates how well the observations of distant galaxies and their central supermassive black holes can be understood in a general framework of theoretical ideas, models, and numerical simulations. Peter Schneider’s Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology offers fundamental information on this fascinating subfield of astronomy, while leading readers to the forefront of astronomical research. But it seeks to accomplish this not only with extensive textual information and insights; the author’s own passion for exploring the workings of the Universe, which can be seen in the text and the many supporting color illustrations, will further inspire the reader. While this book has grown out of introductory university courses on astronomy and astrophysics and includes a set of problems and solutions, it will not only benefit undergraduate students and lecturers; thanks to the comprehensive coverage of the field, even graduate students and researchers specializing in related fields will appreciate it as a valuable reference work. Abstract

This textbook presents the established sciences of optical, infrared, and radio astronomy as distinct research areas, focusing on the science targets and the constraints that they place on instrumentation in the different domains. It aims to bridge the gap between specialized books and practical texts, presenting the state of the art in different techniques.  For each type of astronomy, the discussion proceeds from the orders of magnitude for observable quantities that drive the building of instrumentation and the development of advanced techniques. The specific telescopes and detectors are then presented, together with the techniques used to measure fluxes and spectra.  Finally, the instruments and their limits are discussed to assist readers in choice of setup, planning and execution of observations, and data reduction. The volume also includes worked examples and problem sets to improve student understanding; tables and figures in chapters su mmarize the state of the art of instrumentation and techniques.

Abstract

The works contained in this edited volume represent the culmination of eight years of effort to plant and develop the foundation of an interdisciplinary African urban research network anchored in African institutions. With initial support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Cities Alliance, the creation of the African Urban Research Initiative (AURI) network was subsequently fortified by the Ford Foundation’s call for scholarship oriented towards urbanism in the global South. Based at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, AURI was thus designed to support and, where needed, strengthen exist-ing urban research centres on the African continent to produce credible and robust new knowledge on urban conditions in African cities.
