"The world's growing vulnerability to large scale risks is prompting action at the global scale. This book proposes that architects have played an under recognized but important role in imagining the future of the planet through world-scale projects, while examining the institutional and political scenarios that would make this possible. In so doing, they've reflected on the planetary repercussions wrought of diverse political, social, technological and environmental currents. Rather than indulging in the cliché of the megalomaniac architect, this book aims to presents a discipline reflecting on its own responsibilities, in which geographic and holistic considerations inform ethical and aesthetical positions. From Le Corbusier to Buckminster Fuller from Zaha Hadid to Super Studio and Design Earth, it provides a historical reference of 50 speculative projects from 1882 to the present. The book is the first compilation of its kind, as well as a critical reflection on the world as an architectural project. Curiously, architects have undertaken the world as a project before the advent of contemporary globalization and its associated risks. Their 'ecumenal' aspirations date back to the 19th century. While these visions may not resemble what globalization has produced in terms of physical environment, some tend to be anticipatorily critical of the inequalities it would eventually generate, and of the morass that urbanization would bring about. Some others caution against mistaking imagining the world as a totality for controlling it as such, while they stress the need for an architectural vocabulary to make it legible. The book shows how the world has been a rich domain for the modern architectural imaginary. It is also an invitation to reclaim the scale and challenges of the world, the whole world, as a vital architectural project" [Publisher]

The experimental provides architects with a vital means to test ideas and the untried. Like authors and artists, architects harness the power of fiction to explore alternative models of society and push the boundaries of the possible. Though these imaginings can be influential aesthetically, like the prisons of Piranesi or the cities of Lebbeus Woods, they remain largely confined to paper or the screen - unbuilt. By injecting the experimental with a new realism, however, speculative design has the potential to advance new inclusive, equitable and desirable futures. Showcasing cutting-edge insight, this Design Studio volume advocates the inclusion of the visionary in the architectural design process. It explores the real-world application of near-future fantastical storytelling and the power of imaginative literacy. Articles cover subjects such as plausible impossibilities, other worlds, terraforming, activism, democratising design, future innovations and education, to name but a few. Departing from unrealistic utopian or dystopian visions, they empower plural design reactions in response to real-life scenarios. What impacts might a generational wave of ethical non-monogamy have on the way we use space and the future design of our built environment? Or the introduction of a universal basic income? Or the ready availability of lab grown meat? Thinking, imagining, designing, storytelling ... these are political acts. How will you use your vote?

The architectural scale model has long had an essential role in the design process, creating a tangible, three-dimensional representation of the finished building, but it has not been explored as an artistic medium in its own right. The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) began to fill in this gap in architectural scholarship in 2009, focusing on the history of the model with particular attention paid to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Drawing on the museum's vast collection of models, comprised of more than 1,200 objects created by over four hundred architects from around the world, researchers created both this book and a corresponding exhibit set to open in May 2012. The Architectural Model covers a variety of topics, from the rise of specialized workshops after 1945 to the way in which more sophisticated machinery led to a "Miniature Boom" in the 1950s and '60s. Of special interest is the discussion of the how working models are used by professionals to develop and change their ideas.

Toute forme ou espace, visionnaire, radical, expérimental, absurde semble réalisable. Le livre offre un panorama illustré des réalisations de 108 agences d'architecture et de design (J. Mayer H., Fuksas, Le Quernec, MAD, UNStudio, ARTechnic, Ryue Nishizawa, SelgaCano, WAM, Manuelle Gautrand, b720, Studio Gang, 24H,...) New possibilities for seemingly impossible buildings and spaces. In contemporary architecture nothing appears to be impossible anymore. Today, every form, every space, and every idea--no matter how visionary, radical, or absurd--seems to be not only conceivable, but also technically feasible. Innovative materials and digital construction tools are enabling a new generation of architects, engineers, and designers to build structures that would have previously remained mere dreams. Against this background, buildings, rooms, and installations are being created that are both sculptural and atmospheric. What makes these experimental structures different from those created earlier in the new millennium is that they meld their playful side with rigorous usability. Despite their radical nature, they are made to facilitate comfortable living and effective work. The Sky's the Limit is a collection of inspiring projects by both young and established protagonists of this recent evolution in architecture. The book features spectacularly formed structures and facades as well as new interpretations of walls, ceilings, and floors. Interiors and exteriors of temporary projects and urban interventions are found alongside those of buildings designed to be permanent. The Sky's the Limit challenges architects, engineers, interior designers, artists, booth builders, material experts, and exhibition planners to unleash the potential of cutting-edge building developments. The book is a visual journey to structures at the outer limit of our spatial imagination made more compelling by the fact that they actually exist.

Utopian thought, though commonly characterized as projecting a future without a past, depends on golden models for re-invention of what is. Through a detailed and innovative re-assessment of the work of three architects who sought to represent a utopian content in their work, and a consideration of the thoughts of a range of leading writers, Coleman offers the reader a unique perspective of idealism in architectural design. With unparalleled depth and focus of vision on the work of Le Corbusier, Louis I Kahn and Aldo van Eyck, this book persuasively challenges predominant as

Hani Rashid, co-founder of Asymptote, the visionary New York architectural practice, has been heading up Studio Hani Rashid in Vienna since 2011. The curriculum focuses on the development of conceptual and practical skills for creating future-oriented architecture – on experimental investigation of atmospheric, phenomenal, and visual effects, which provides intelligent solutions for contemporary forms of dwelling and being but which should also satisfy "feasibility criteria". "Re: Futures" uses texts, digital visualizations and descriptive architectural sketches to document the work created over recent years, and thereby reveals a spectrum of contemporary design methods and future-oriented architectural themes.
