The exhibition focuses on the thinking of the great humanist, not his biography. Scholarship and education, war and peace, church and faith, it was on these subjects that Erasmus published fundamental and groundbreaking works. Nonetheless it is not the word that is key here but the image or, more accurately, the art of the periode 1450-1550. These are paintings, portraits, drawings, prints and statues, that illustrate, reveal and give insight into Erasmus's ideas. More than a hundred works grouped into five sections lie at the heart of this book. They are preceded by two general essays, one with an introduction to Erasmus' life and work, and one exploring his views on art and his relationship with artists. Two more specialist essays examine the subjects of book illustration and the decorative arts.

The National Gallery of Art introduces a new journal presenting the latest conservation research on works in its collection. Named for "the manner in which things are made", 'Facture' addresses aspects of conservation from treatment and technical art history to scientific research. The inaugural volume focuses on great works of the Renaissance, studying sculpture, painting and drawing from various points of view. With the publication of this biennial journal, the National Gallery maintains a tradition of fostering dialogue among art historians, scientists and conservators working in the international museum community. 'Facture' presents articles by highly respected authorities aimed at the specialist as well as the general reader with a passion for art. Future issues will concentrate on other themes in the materiality and history of art, addressing all aspects of the discipline from conservation treatment and history to technical art history and fundamental scientific research.

Elucidating the steps that led to a finished work of art has been one of Molly Faries’ principal concerns in nearly forty years of research and teaching. A pioneer in infrared reflectography, she has demonstrated like no other scholar the importance of technical studies to art history, in the way that they provide insight into an artist’s technique and development, into collaboration within a workshop, and into master-pupil relationships. Molly Faries has taught generations of students and colleagues to view paintings not as static objects but as the results of successive choices. The volume’s title, Invention: Northern Renaissance Studies in Honor of Molly Faries, evokes Molly’s passion for understanding an artist’s creative process. The term “invention” is here understood in the widest possible sense: How did a work of art come into being? How did an artist react to new stimuli or adapt to a new culture? Was innovation valued above adherence to a local tradition? To what degree could artists shape their patrons’ taste? How did artists transform their own inventions over time and adopt those of others? Was there a concept of invention specific to the Northern Renaissance and how did it differ from ours? The authors who tackle these and other questions include university professors, curators, conservators, and conservation scientists, all recognized specialists in northern European art of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The artists they discuss are among the greatest painters, manuscript illuminators, printmakers, and sculptors: Johan Maelwael, the Limbourg brothers, Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, Lieven van Lathem, Juan de Flandes, Jean Hey, Albrecht Dürer, Hieronymus Bosch, Master H.L., Jacques Du Broeucq, and Jan Brueghel the Elder. This book, one of the few devoted specifically to the concept of invention in Northern Renaissance art, is richly illustrated with 32 color plates and 179 black-and-white reproductions; it includes an index.

The first in-depth exploration of rape as it has been portrayed in Western art from the twelfth through seventeenth centuries. Examining the full range of representations, from those that glorify rape to those that condemn it, Diane Wolfthal illuminates the complex web of attitudes towards sexual violence that existed in the medieval and early modern society. Wolfthal first explores Italian Renaissance and Baroque images of 'heroic' rape, in which the victim seldom suffers and the crime is sanitized, aestheticized, or eroticized. These are contrasted with a range of images, mostly created in Northern Europe, that have been ignored. Often critical of the assailant and sympathetic to his victim, these works reveal that society did, in certain circumstances, severely condemn the act of rape. Wolfthal demonstrates how this range of images still influences contemporary debate about sexual violence. Winner of the Sierra Prize, Western Association of Women Historians in the year 2000
