Africa is generally regarded by scholars and the mass media as a "continent on the move" - a movement primarily in the direction of Europe. Yet the public debate is dominated by two misconceptions. The first of these is that high population growth in Africa would almost automatically trigger higher international migration to the neighbouring European continent. There is even talk of a "rush to Europe". The second frequently encountered misconception is that migration and flight in and from Africa is primarily a result of poverty, violent conflicts and environmental degradation. Both are misconceptions that cannot be reconciled with the facts at hand. These facts are the subject of this volume. The authors Prof. Thomas Faist PhD heads the research group Sociology of Transnationalization and the Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD) at Bielefeld University. Tobias Gehring is doing his doctorate at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University and the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS). Dr. Susanne U. Schultz received her doctorate from the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University. She is a senior expert at the Bertelsmann Stiftung and an Associated Research Fellow at the Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD).

The present book examines cultural diversities of Northeast India. The sixteen essays included in the volume cover various aspects of cultural forms and their practices among the communities of Northeast. The present volume is expected to serve as a bridge between vanishing cultural forms and their commodification, on the one hand, and their cultural ritual origins, evolution and significance in identity formation, on the other. The book analyses continuity of cultural forms, their representations and often their reinventions under globalisation. Further, the book underlines historical forces such as colonialism and religious conversion that have transformed communities and their cultural practices. Yet some of the pre-colonial, ritual-performative traditions hold on. Through insightful analyses, this book offers an informed view of the region’s historical, ethnic and cultural practices. It is expected that the volume will be useful for scholars and students interested in Northeast studies.

This open access book provides methodological devices and analytical frameworks for the study of societies in transformation. It explores a central paradox in the study of change: making sense of change requires long-term perspectives on societal transformations and on the different ways people experience social change, whereas the research carried out to study change is necessarily limited to a relatively short space of time. This volume offers a range of methodological responses to this challenge by paying attention to the complex entanglement of qualitative research and the metanarratives generally used to account for change. Each chapter is based on a concrete case study from different parts of the world and tackles a diversity of topics, analytical approaches, and data collection methods. The contributors’ innovative solutions provide valuable tools and techniques for all those interested in the study of change.

While previous research has explored the academic adaptation or acculturation processes of Chinese students studying abroad, limited attention has been paid to students’ own perspectives and narrations of their experience. To contribute to a more nuanced understanding of this highly mobile group, this study takes a closer look at the students’ self-identity narratives. How do they make sense of their foreign adventure? How do they position themselves among their peers and their family members, as well as within the greater transnational context? Based on 29 in-depth, biographical interviews with Chinese students in the United States, the findings show the participants’ continuously interpreting and revising their individual, academic, and cultural identities. In the familial context, a recurring narrative of the high-potential only-child could be observed. Many students (and their family members) felt that their unique talents and personalities were not appreciated within the Chinese educational system and thus sought more holistic environments abroad. About the author Dr. Sarah Köksal is a researcher in American Cultural History and Cultural Anthropology at Ludwig Maximilian University. For her research project on narrative identities of Chinese international students she conducted fieldwork at the University of California Berkeley and was a recipient of the 2021 LMU-UCB Excellent Research in the Humanities Scholarship.
