En ce temps-là le Languedoc était pour l'Église un danger : ses chefs y toléraient la religion cathare. Pour la France du Nord et la monarchie capétienne, cette province riche, jalouse de son indépendance et de sa culture, mais désunie, était une proie convoitée. Quand le pape Innocent III, en 1209, prêcha la croisade contre l'hérésie cathare, commença une longue guerre de conquête : armées de croisés, puis armées royales déferlèrent sur le Languedoc. Les efforts conjugués de la Royauté, de la Papauté et de l'Inquisition eurent raison de la résistance occitane. Le 16 mars 1244, Montésgur, dernier sanctuaire du catharisme, tombait après un siège de dix mois. Dans une Occitanie annexée à la couronne, il n'y eut plus de tentative de révolte religieuse ni nationale.
