Abstract

Incised figure-slabs provide an unrivalled gallery of medieval fashion-plates, including 'all sorts and conditions of men' from the king down to the beggar, and some entrancing vignettes of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Chapters on the dress of the clergy as represented on incised slabs, academical dress, military equipment and civil dress of the laity (royal personages, lawyers, male and female civil dress, the saints and other religious subjects.
