Au XIVe siècle, la ville de Toulouse s’affirme comme capitale régionale et artistique. Peintres, sculpteurs et orfèvres y produisent un art original. L’exposition dresse un état des lieux inédit de la création à Toulouse à cette période en s'appuyant sur les recherches les plus récentes.L’organisation de la ville et le mode de vie à Toulouse seront notamment évoqués, donnant un aperçu de la céramique de la table toulousaine, ou à travers des épitaphes, de la diversité des Toulousains du XIVe siècle.L’exposition présentera également une sélection de chefs-d’œuvre autour de quatre statues provenant d’un édifice disparu, la chapelle de Rieux à Toulouse : ces œuvres sont parmi les plus belles sculptures polychromées de l’époque, à l’échelle de la France et même de l’Europe

This beautiful illuminated manuscript, now in Vienna, Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, is one of the earliest surviving examples of a unique group of Bibles containing the most extensive cycles of biblical illustrations juxtaposed with theological and allegorical interpretative images. The present moralized Bible was produced in Paris in the first half of the 13th century, and contains over 1000 exquisitely illuminated medallions accompanied by textual extracts and commentaries that act as captions to the illustrations and thus reveal, by word and image, the relevance of the Bible to contemporary life. They reflect the rapidly-changing world of the thirteenth century and highlight the many ideological problems prominent in the intellectual and political milieu of the time. In his commentary to the manuscript, Gerald Guest explains the origins of this type of Bible manuscript; he compares the work with other surviving examples, examines the style and meaning of the illuminations, poses the likely patrons and puts the creation of the moralized Bible in its intellectual and artistic context. The author has also translated all the French texts that accompany the illuminations into English. It is a book that has long fascinated both historians and art-historians, since it stands out not only as one of the major artistic achievements of its time, but also as an important historical document for an understanding of medieval Europe. All illuminated pages of Codex 2554 are reproduced in full colour in this volume.

Avec l'avènement de "la pensée gothique", le christianisme s'est découvert une nouvelle manière d xprimer la Création et les expériences du temps. Cette manière se caractérise par une sensibilité à la représentation de plénitude dans la Création (horror vacui). En prenant les fameux Bibles Moralisées comme étude de cas, Babette Hellemans met en évidence diverses expériences temporelles du monde de la première moitié du XIIIe siècle: l'acte de créer, l'incarnation et le débat scolastique sur la notion de présence par rapport à la question de la condition humaine. Le lecteur est engagé dans la découverte passionnante d'une famille cohérente de manuscrits, considérés d'abord dans leur matérialité d'objets - le codex, ses folios de parchemin, le texte du scribe et les médaillons du peintre, les lignes et les couleurs - matérialité à partir de laquelle se révèle le sens du texte et des images.
