King David if one of the most central figures in all of the major monotheistic traditions. He generally connotes the heroic past of the (more imagined than real) ancient Israelite empire and is associated with messianic hopes for the future. Nevertheless, his richly ambivalent and fascinating literary portrayal in the Hebrew Bible is one of the most complex of all biblical characters. This volume aims at taking a new, critical look at the process of biblical creation and subsequent exegetical transformation of the character of David and his attributed literary composition (the Psalms), with particular emphasis put on the multilateral fertilization and cross-cultural interchanges among Jews, Christians and Muslims.

In the narratives of the Books of Samuel, Saul and David are not only two different individual figures; they also represent their kingdoms Israel and Judah. Thus the contrast between the two kings as a continuous distinguishing historiographic feature also reflects the Israelite-Judean conflict. Klaus-Peter Adam deals with the figures and the plot of the narratives and integrates their themes into the entire Deuteronomic history. The author shows how the covenants and rebellious upheavals form an important thematic link between the epoch of the former kings in the Books of Samuel and the epoch of the divided monarchy in the Books of the Kings. He also demonstrates how biblical historiography can be seen within the broader field of ancient historiography.

Starting from David's response to Nathan's parable in 2 Sam 12, this book employs an original synthesis of literary, linguistic and psychoanalytic theory to explore the impact of the biblical text on its readers. It draws parallels between the relationships of speaker to utterance, texts to reader and father to son in arguing for an underlying "anxiety of utterance" as the source of textual power. Biblical scholars will find stimulating readings of many problematic narratives as well as a detailed investigation of the poetics of the biblical oath. The theoretical account of the role of characters in mediating the interaction between text and reader will be of interest to all students of literature. Its provocative insights into the relationship between God, language, masculinity and authority raise important questions for theology and gender studies.

Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.
