Abstract

"Sharing economy" and "collaborative economy" refer to a proliferation of initiatives, business models, digital platforms and forms of work that characterise contemporary life: from community-led initiatives and activist campaigns, to the impact of global sharing platforms in contexts such as network hospitality, transportation, etc. Sharing the common lens of ethnographic methods, this book presents in-depth examinations of collaborative economy phenomena. The book combines qualitative research and ethnographic methodology with a range of different collaborative economy case studies and topics across Europe. It uniquely offers a truly interdisciplinary approach. It emerges from a unique, long-term, multinational, cross-European collaboration between researchers from various disciplines (e.g., sociology, anthropology, geography, business studies, law, computing, information systems), career stages, and epistemological backgrounds, brought together by a shared research interest in the collaborative economy. This book is a further contribution to the in-depth qualitative understanding of the complexities of the collaborative economy phenomenon. These rich accounts contribute to the painting of a complex landscape that spans several countries and regions, and diverse political, cultural, and organisational backdrops. This book also offers important reflections on the role of ethnographic researchers, and on their stance and outlook, that are of paramount interest across the disciplines involved in collaborative economy research.

Abstract

"The specific concern of this study is 'politicization' or the relationships between contests in national politics and the capacity for international cooperation. Progress towards fiscal harmonization in the European Community is selected as the substantive focus for the study, although the object is to learn from the EC rather than about it. The author argues that common EC policies usually reach fruition as complex compromises, derived from decisions based on the perceived effect on domestic politics and rivalries, rather than transnational neatness. Lack of political will is frequently blamed for delays in the acceptance of common policies, whereas the truth often lies in the fact that national governments believe that domestic political costs would be prohibitive. Politicization is studied in four major areas: 1. Identification, causes and effects 2. The effect on domestic politics and transnational cooperation in the EC 3. Effects on further 'European integration' 4. Deriving lessons from the EC for more general relationships between domestic politics and international cooperation."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Abstract

Australia is a global citizen with an interest in enhancing regional stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and improving the lives of the world's poorest people, particularly in Africa. To that end, Australia maintains an international aid program which this year will spend almost $5 billion on development assistance, representing 0.35% of Gross National Income. This book examines the Australian government's current aid commitments and reforms, exploring a range of factors that include the reasons for aid, how it is delivered to partner countries, and the public debate over the level of aid given and its effectiveness. The role of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) in delivering development assistance is also examined. What are the various forms of international aid, and how is it used in developing countries to reduce poverty, improve food security, health and education, enhance human rights, and assist with disaster relief? As an affluent, developed nation, is Australia giving enough 'bang for its buck' with its taxpayer-funded aid program?
