Abstract

International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health (formerly International Family Planning Perspectives), published 1975-2020, focuses on peer-reviewed research about sexual and reproductive health in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia. Topics include contraceptive practice and research; fertility levels, trends and determinants; adolescent pregnancy; sexual behavior; HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; public policies and legal issues affecting family planning and childbearing; program operation, development and evaluation; information, education and communication activities; reproductive, maternal and child health; and abortion. Special reports, commentaries and viewpoint pieces supplement the research content and aim to inspire new approaches to issues affecting low- and middle-income countries. All research article abstracts are available in Spanish and French.

Abstract

"In this book, Chidi Oguamanam argues that the crisis of legitimacy that indigenous knowledge poses for the intellectual property system calls for a rethinking of the intellectual property jurisprudence in a cross-cultural direction." "Oguamanan's study draws from interdisciplinary research in the social and medical sciences. It uses as its framework of analysis the legal doctrinal methodology, focusing on international legal and policy developments regarding the protection of indigenous knowledge, with emphasis on plant biodiversity as the mainstay of indigenous or traditional medicinal knowledge."--Jacket.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the macroeconomics of HIV/AIDS. The paper highlights that the mortality and morbidity associated with AIDS make it unlike most other types of sickness and disease. The paper describes the most common approaches used in accounting for growth in the context of an HIV/AIDS epidemic. The impact of HIV/AIDS on education and the accumulation of human capital is discussed. The paper also discusses the impact of HIV/AIDS on the public sector, and elaborates certain demographic events specific to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
