"New Zealand Landscape: Behind the Scene explores the geomorphology of New Zealand, describing how the landscapes developed and how some of the individual features that make up the scene evolved. It commences at the very beginning with the microcontinent Zealandia breaking away from Gondwana, and follows the evolution of the landmass and its landforms until the present day. It explores the effect of climate change on the islands' landscape and, in particular, the interaction of tectonic and climatic processes as the mountain ranges emerged. The book investigates the origins of many landscape features, including New Zealand's volcanoes and mountains, rivers and fluvial landscapes, glacial fjords and glacial history, karst and caves, and landform evolution at the mobile land-sea interface. New Zealand Landscape concludes with a review of the suite of geophysical hazards that occur in New Zealand and confront people living in the landscape. It considers the risk that these hazards present and the measures sometimes taken to mitigate them"--

The Imaginary Geography of Hollywood Cinema 1960-2000 combines digital cartography with close readings of representative films to write a history of twentieth century Hollywood narrative cinema at the intersection of the geographies of narrative location, production, consumption and taste in the post-classical era, before the rise of digital cinema. This text reorients and redraws the boundaries of film history both literally and figuratively by cataloguing films' narrative locations on digital maps to examine where Hollywood locates its narratives over time.

An investigation into the spatial politics of separation and division in South Africa, principally during the apartheid years, and the effects of these physical and conceptual barriers on the land. In contrast to the weight of literature focusing on post-apartheid South Africa, the focus of this book includes the spatial, political and cultural landscape practices of the apartheid government and also refers to contemporary work done in Australia, England and the US. It probes the uncertainty and ambiguity of identities and cultures in post-apartheid society in order to gain a deep understan

"The book offers an interdisciplinary overview of the film and place relationship from an intercultural perspective. It explores the complex domain of place and space in cinema and the film industry's role in establishing cultural connections and economic cooperation between India and Europe. With contributions from leading international scholars, various case studies scrutinise European and Indian contexts, exploring both the established and emerging locations. The book extends the dominantly Britain-oriented focus on India's cinema presence in Europe to European countries such as Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Slovenia, Finland and Sweden, where the Indian film industry progressively expands its presence. The chapters of this book looks at Indian film production in Europe as a cultural bridge between India and Europe, fostering mutual understanding of the culture and society of the two regions. This interdisciplinary book will be of interest to researchers in film studies, cultural anthropology, cultural geography, tourism, economics, sociology and cultural studies. It will also be interest to practitioners working in local authorities, destination management, tourism and creative business, all of whom see the value of film production in attracting visitors, investment and creating new networks with local economic actors. The book offers much-needed data and tools to translate their professional goals and potentials into effective regional strategies and activities"--

This Vast Book of Nature is a careful, engaging, accessible, and wide-ranging account of the ways in which the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire---and, by implication, other wild places---have been written into being by different visitors, residents, and developers from the post-Revolutionary era to the days of high tourism at the beginning of the twentieth century. Drawing on tourist brochures, travel accounts, pictorial representations, fiction and poetry, local histories, journals, and newspapers, Pavel Cenkl gauges how Americans have arranged space for political and economic purpos

Landscape of Desire powerfully documents and celebrates a place and the evolutions that occur when human beings are intimately connected to their surroundings. Greg Gordon accomplishes this with a tapestry of writing that interweaves land use history, natural history, experiential education, and personal reflection. He tracks the geomorphology of southern Utah as well as the creatures and plants his student group encounters, the history lessons (planned and unplanned), the trials and joys of gathering so many individuals into a cohesive will, and his own personal epiphan
