Abstract

This book provides readers with vast knowledge of practical applications, theoretical models, services and evidence-based solutions in the areas of assistive technology (AT) and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). It aims to equip practicing clinicians, educators and students with the necessary background to use AT and AAC with their clients. This book also sheds light on the many different roles and functions of AT and AAC for a large variety of clinical populations, and suggests solutions the reader can implement immediately. Although a particular focus is set on communication disorders, described applications and resources also apply to individuals with developmental disabilities and sensory impairments. In addition to outlining most recent low and high technology, this book makes a particularly strong effort to teach general principles and guidelines for successful AT and AAC interventions regardless of what particular technology is used. This resource is a crucial addition to the bookshelf of any professional dealing with AT and/or AAC, including speech-language pathologists, special educators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, early intervention specialists, students in professional programs, users of AT or AAC, their families, and applied researchers. This is a must read for novices and seasoned professional alike.

Abstract

The Advances in special education technology series is designed to focus international attention on applications of technology for individuals with disabilities. Outstanding researchers from around the world will contribute chapters synthesizing the research evidence on specific types of technology interventions that improve access, engagement, and learning outcomes of diverse learners. The scope of contributions will cover subfields known as assistive technology, instructional design, instructional technology, online learning, personalized learning, and universal design for learning and will encompass both formal (i.e., school) and informal learning settings (i.e., self-directed, museums) across the lifespan (i.e., preschool - adult).

Abstract

Assistive Technology Service Delivery: A Practical Guide for Disability and Employment Professionals provides professionals working in vocational rehabilitation with the guidelines and methodologies they need to carry out their daily work at a high standard. Crucially, the techniques and tools described in the book are based on evidence gathered in rigorous research. Chapters cover an introduction to the accommodations system, the role of assistive technology as an accommodation and evidence-based practice in vocational rehabilitation, the service delivery process, from referral, through technology procurement and implementation, to the monitoring of outcomes. Drawing on their extensive experience, the authors then present techniques, tools and tips for assistive technology service delivery, with illustrative case study examples. Written with practicing assistive technology professionals and students in mind, this book translates technical knowledge into content that professionals can understand and readily apply.

Abstract

Ambient Assisted Living and Enhanced Living Environments: Principles, Technologies and Control separates the theoretical concepts concerning the design of such systems from their real-world implementations. For each important topic, the book bridges theory and practice, introducing the instruments needed by professionals in their activities. To this aim, topics are presented in a logical sequence, with the introduction of each topic motivated by the need to respond to claims and requirements from a wide range of AAL/ELE applications. The advantages and limitations of each model or technology are presented through concrete case studies for AAL/ELE systems. The book also presents up-to-date technological solutions to the main aspects regarding AAL/ELE systems and applications, a highly dynamic scientific domain that has gained much interest in the world of IT in the last decade. In addition, readers will find discussions on recent AAL/ELE technologies that were designed to solve some of the thorniest business problems that affect applications in areas such as health and medical supply, smart city and smart housing, Big Data and Internet of Things, and many more. Introduces readers to technologies supporting the development of Ambient Assisted Living applications Explains state-of-the-art technological solutions for the main issues regarding AAL and Enhanced Living Environments Reports the development process of scientific and commercial applications and platforms that support AAL and ELE Identifies the advanced solutions in the context of Enhanced Living Environments
