"Em uma época de transformações dos paradigmas modernos que guiaram a sociedade por mais de um século, as autoras analisam três conceitos: a individualização, a cidadania e o processo de inclusão-exclusão social. Tais conceitos são historicamente situados e sofrem alterações conforme seu contexto sócio político. Ao se debruçarem sobre eles, buscam situá-los segundo os paradigmas atuais. A individualização é conceituada como um processo transversal, que impacta sobremaneira as relações sociais na atualidade. Por sua vez, a cidadania é analisada segundo a ideia de pertencimento, participação política, bem como aquisição da consciência de ser portador de direitos e deveres. Vista como conceito complementar à cidadania, a inclusão é compreendida segundo os processos de vulnerabilidade social, impulsionada pela precarização do trabalho, corrosão da sociabilidade primária e a expansão dos estigmas, o que vem a impactar na exclusão/inclusão social.
