Desde finales de los años cincuenta, la importancia asignada a la industria petrolera mexicana, nacionalizada en 1938, no radicó únicamente en el abastecimiento oportuno y suficiente de energéticos al mercado interno, sino también en el suministro de insumos petroquímicos.
