The scope of neuropathology continues to expand, as evidenced by increasing numbers of multivolume and specialty texts, which have been published in recent years. For those in the neuroscience disciplines, the ever increasing amount of information one needs to assimilate and master can be challenging and even at times daunting. As with the first edition, this second edition of Neuropathology Review summarizes, in outline form, the essentials of neuropathology. The objective is twofold: 1) to provide an overview of neuropathology for those initially encountering the discipline and, 2) to provide a framework for review for those preparing for in-service and board examinations in the disciplines of neurology, neurosurgery and pathology, which require some knowledge of neuropathology. The volume is conveniently divided into three sections. The first part presents, in outline form, basic updated information on the spectrum of neurologic-related disease. The second part presents pertinent pictoral examples of a spectrum of neuropathologic conditions in a question format with answers and brief explanation provided. The final section includes a series of written questions with provided answers and explanations in order to review the material presented in the first section of the text. New questions have been added to the bank of questions previously published in the first addition. Comprehensive and timely, Neuropathology Review is an essential reference for neuropathology residents and fellows, pathology residents, neurology residents, and medical library students.

Scientists have great passion. What could be more exhilarating than to go to work every day feeling as if you were once again a nine-year-old called up to he stage to help the magician with his trick? To be a researcher is to always be in the position of having the chance to see how the trick works. No wonder that many researchers feel that each new day is the most exciting day to be a scientist. It therefore is not surprising that scientists have such trouble communicating with non-scientists. It is difficult for the scientist to understand a life not focused on the desire to understand. But the differences are not that. Everyone wants to understand; that is one of the factors that make us human. The difference is more that scientists limit their definition of comprehension to specific rules of logic and evidence. These rules apply and are used in everyday life, but often with less rigor or restrictions on evidence.

The transcription of messenger RNA from a DNA template is a key process in a wide variety of biological systems. In Gene Expression Profiling: Methods and Protocols, leaders in gene expression methodology and bioinformatics data analysis share their best methods for measuring RNA levels in cells and tissues. Each proven protocol is described in step-by-step detail and contains an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Special care has been taken to distill the basic underlying principles of each method to a few straightforward concepts so that investigators can easily choose the method most appropriate to their application. The readily reproducible techniques presented include new methods for applying the GeneChip®, SAR-SAGE, StaRT-PCR, SSH, the Invader Assay®, and ADGEM. The authors also provide critical bioinformatics insight and resources for data analysis and management. Cutting-edge and highly practical, Gene Expression Profiling: Methods and Protocols allows novice and experienced investigators alike not only to choose the best method to determine how genes are turned on and off in many different organisms, but also to use informatics resources to analyze and understand the results.

"The book provides a synthesis of the key issues and challenges which face agriculture and food production in Southern Africa. Agriculture and food security in Southern Africa are facing numerous challenges from diverse issues such as growing populations, urbanization and climate change. These challenges place great pressure on water and other natural resources, plus for biodiversity. The chapters in this book consider all these challenge from an interdisciplinary perspective, coverings key areas in constraints to production, the most important building blocks of good farming practices, and established and emerging technologies. This will be valuable to help support and inform new policies and processes, farmers from small to medium sized farms in improving food production and security, and new approached, such as sustainable intensification. This concise and informative volume will be key reading for those interested in agricultural science, African studies, rural studies, development studies, geography and sustainability. It will also be a valuable resource for policy makers, governmental and non-governmental organizations and agricultural practitioners"--

The Routledge History of Disease draws on innovative scholarship in the history of medicine to explore the challenges involved in writing about health and disease throughout the past and across the globe, presenting a varied range of case studies and perspectives on the patterns, technologies and narratives of disease that can be identified in the past and that continue to influence our present. Organized thematically, chapters examine particular forms and conceptualizations of disease, covering subjects from leprosy in medieval Europe and cancer screening practices in twentieth-century USA to the ayurvedic tradition in ancient India and the pioneering studies of mental illness that took place in nineteenth-century Paris, as well as discussing the various sources and methods that can be used to understand the social and cultural contexts of disease. Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989, the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation. As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction, cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex reconstructions. A final section presents potential future directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced understanding of the biological and material properties of allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in the successful management of challenging cardiac reconstructions.>.
