Abstract

Much has been written, and very well written, on the collection in the 19th century in and through fiction: it is therefore another path that the voices gathered here would like to explore. Based on collections of all kinds (private and public, literary, historical and artistic, editorial and museological), from a necessarily and resolutely interdisciplinary perspective, the aim is to question the specificity of the act and of the discourse of the collection in the 19th century, and to think of it as a figuration and a fiction, a production and a projection of a, or even of the, 19th century.

Abstract

From ’folk devils’ to ballroom dancers, this volume explores the changing reception of fashionable couple dances in Europe from the eighteenth century onwards. A refreshing intervention in dance studies, this book brings together elements of historiography, cultural memory, folklore, and dance across comparatively narrow but markedly heterogeneous localities. Rooted in investigations of often newly discovered primary sources, the essays afford many opportunities to compare sociocultural and political reactions to the arrival and practice of popular rotating couple dances, such as the Waltz and the Polka. Leading contributors provide a transnational and affective lens onto strikingly diverse topics, ranging from the evolution of romantic couple dances in Croatia, and Strauss’s visits to Hamburg and Altona in the 1830s, to dance as a tool of cultural preservation and expression in twentieth-century Finland. Waltzing Through Europe creates openings forfresh collaborations in dance historiography and cultural history across fields and genres. It is essential reading for researchers of dance in central and northern Europe, while also appealing to the general reader who wants to learn more about the vibrant histories of these familiar dance forms. As with all Open Book publications, this entire book is available to read for free on the publisher’s website. Printed and digital editions, together with supplementary digital material, can also be found at www.openbookpublishers.com

Abstract

"New Yorks most valuable citizen" – this honorary title was given to Adolph Lewisohn. When he was born in Hamburg in 1849 as the son of Orthodox Jews and successful merchants, a career as a merchant was put in his cradle. In search of personal freedom he persuaded his strict father in 1867 to let him go to New York. The fact that Lewisohn, as an industrialist in the USA, will generate millions of euros in only twenty years time would have seemed like a fairy tale to the young migrant. With dedication, foresight and flexibility he builds a copper empire. For four decades he then supports countless charitable projects with millions of euros. The Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Society) also owes him one of the biggest donations it received when it was founded. This is the first biography of this exceptionally successful businessman, art collector and international philanthropist.

Abstract

The chancellery was established as the supreme judicial and administrative authority for the royal portion of Schleswig and Holstein in Flensburg in 1648 and moved to Glückstadt in 1649. Its jurisdiction had been limited to Holstein since 1713 and was extended to the county of Rantzau in 1734, to the Plönian lands in 1762 and to the Gottorfian lands in 1774. At the same time, the name "Glückstädtische Regierung" was replaced by "Holsteinische Landesregierung zu Glückstadt und Holsteinisches Oberkonsistorium". The previously formally different special courts - judicial chancellery, Oberamtsgericht, Pinnebergisches-, Altonaisches-, Rantzauisches Oberappellationsgericht - were combined in 1806 as "Holsteinisches Obergericht". Since 1816 it was called "Holstein-Lauenburgisches Obergericht". When justice and administration were separated in the middle instance in 1834, the administration was transferred to the Schleswig-Holstein government at Gottorf; the higher court continued to exist as a purely judicial authority. When the judiciary and administration were separated in 1834, the records were divided. Most of the judicial files remaining in Glückstadt were later destroyed; the administrative files were preserved and form the core of the holdings kept in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives.

Abstract

Abstract

Marriage was historically not only a romantic ideal, but a tool of exploitation of women in many regards. Women were often considered commodities and marriage was far away from the romantic stereotypes people relate to it today. While marriages served as diplomatic tools or means of political legitimization in the past, the discourses about marital relationships changed and women expressed their demands more openly. Discourses about marriage in history and literature naturally became more and more heated, especially during the "long" 19th century, when marriages were contested by social reformers or political radicals, male and female alike. The present volume provides a discussion of the role of marriage and the discourses about in different chronological and geographical contexts and shows which arguments played an important role for the demand for more equality in martial relationships. It focuses on marriage discourses, may they have been legal or rather socio-political ones. In addition, the disputes about marriage in literary works of the 19th and 20th centuries are presented to complement the historical debates.

Abstract

In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), prehistory was part of the national narrative that served to legitimize the dictatorial regime of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). However, the socialist conception of prehistory came up against a heavily loaded ideological legacy in the wake of the notions of ‘German prehistory’ that had been espoused during the National Socialist period. Museums were tasked with mastering the politically prescribed narrative shift from an ethnic-nationalist conception of prehistory to a Marxist one. Using an extensive body of exhibition photos, this doctoral project analyses the depiction of prehistory in museums of the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR as well as discourses that led to the alteration or persistence of related concepts.

Abstract

Rarely is the collecting of prints in libraries looked at more closely, although this was still intensively cultivated in the 19th century, especially in Hamburg's active bourgeois culture. Once again, it becomes apparent that trade and artistic sensibility certainly went hand in hand in the Hanseatic city. Studying the copperplate engravings in the Hamburg State and University Library has brought to light a variety of traces that point to the provenances of the original owners and to the way the library dealt with them. They have been examined in detail and with dedicated research work by a group of art history students and presented in this book in a scientifically sound manner with new perspectives. In addition to the ramified history of the collection, the book also aims to draw attention to the works themselves, which are now digitally recorded and thus accessible. The publication combines both historical-critical library and collection history as well as an examination of modern instruments for making them available.
