Lapita comprises an archaeological horizon that is fundamental to the understanding of human colonisation and settlement of the Pacific as it is associated with the arrival of the common ancestors of the Polynesians and many Austronesian-speaking Melanesians more than 3000 years ago. While Lapita archaeology has captured the imagination and sustained the focus of archaeologists for more than 50 years, more recent discoveries have inspired renewed interpretations and assessments. Oceanic Explorations reports on a number of these latest discoveries and includes papers which reassess the Lapita phenomenon in light of this new data. This book offers new insights into the Memorial of Moses on Mount Nebo, one of the most renowned coenobitic monasteries in the Byzantine period in Arabia. Starting from the archaeological data, the author critically reflects on the architectural phases of the basilica, the management and daily life in the monastery. Special attention is also given to pilgrimages to the monastic shrines beyond the River Jordan and their progressive abandonment. Ancient Aigeira in the Peloponnese is characterized by a Mycenaean settlement situated on the upper parts of the area. Based on its stratigraphy and findings, we reconstruct the top of this settlement, the so-called acropolis, which was built after the fall of the Mycenaean palaces, i.e. during the 12th century BC. In addition, the storage vessels and the well-preserved pottery vessels which are of importance for the reconstruction of the settlement are presented for the first time. From examining the layout of the rooms, courts and alleys, the hearths and ovens, the small finds, the storage vessels and the pottery vessels found in situ, we are able to distinguish a settlement organized in house complexes. Each house is attributed to a household, which is based on family structures. These house complexes are characterized by storage, production of goods and consumption in the course of feasting. At the same time the high social status of the inhabitants is highlighted by a cult room. During its final phase the settlement is surrounded by a fortification wall which demarcates the acropolis from the houses on the lower terraces and marks it as the most important part of the settlement area.

This monograph presents a significant portion of the scientific results of the archaeological excavations at the Bronze Age settlement site of Punta di Zambrone on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria (southern Italy). These excavations were conducted from 2011 to 2013 in an Italian-Austrian cooperation. The book is the first in a series dedicated to the final publication of those excavations and focuses on the later part of the settlement history (13th-12th cent. BCE). Major topics include the topography of the site (including a harbour bay), its chronology, investigations into the economic basis of the Bronze Age society and its local, regional and interregional interactions. The new data from Punta di Zambrone are evaluated in comparison with new research results from coeval sites in Italy and Greece, which forms the basis for a historical contextualization of the settlement and thus contributes to the broader reconstruction of Mediterranean history at the end of the second millennium BCE. These coeval sites are presented by their excavators or investigators. The authors conducted geophysical and bathymetric surveys as well as underwater archaeological investigations, typological analyses of artefacts, a definition of the relative and absolute chronology, archaeobotanic and archaeozoological studies, aDNA analysis, Sr isotope analyses on human and animal teeth, chemical and Pb isotope analyses on metal artefacts, provenance analyses of pottery vessels, amber and stone artefacts (from Zambrone and other sites).
