Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398) belongs to the early 'Modern Devotion'. This is what the 'renewed innocence' movement, which arose around 1375 in Deventer, was inspired by Geert Grote and Florens Radewijns. They developed a reform program that focused on the spiritual transformation of man. Gerard Zerbolt played a prominent role as a brother of the common life. He led an intensive book production, worked for ecclesiastical recognition of the brotherhood and mastered her charisma. He wrote two leading manuals for the spiritual way. More than Grote and Radewijns, Gerard Zerbolt laid the foundation for an own spirituality of the Modern Devotion. The spiritualibus ascensionibus had not yet been translated into modern Dutch. The Middle Dutch translation already bore the title Spiritual Ascensions. This book describes the way of man who wants to return from the resemblance with his Creator to the original parable. Against the vices that can infuse people, Gerard Zerbolt places the virtues as counter forces. His writings contain all the elements to help us as people of our time to achieve a new image of humanity and a new vision of society.

"Sanātana Gosvamin's Haribhaktivilasa (ca. 1540) describes the normative ritual life of a Vaisnava devotee. As it is one of the first Sanskrit texts of Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition begun by Sri Krsna Caitanya (1486-1533) it presents a fascinating meeting between this ecstatic new religious movement and older, Brahminical tradition. On the basis of eleven manuscripts, this important text has now been for the first time been critically edited. In his extensive introduction, Mans Broo engages with many of the questions that have vexed earlier scholars of this text (such as who really was the author?) by exploring its extensive intertextualities"--

The present book is dedicated to one main aspect of the Marian cult: it investigates the historical process that made Mary, mother of Jesus, the most prominent intercessor across the Byzantine Empire at the end of Iconoclasm (843). The study touches religious and social issues, it refers only to contemporary ideas and sources and distinguishes itself consciously from later mariological concepts.

Since the 1970s the feminization thesis has become a powerful trope in the rewriting of the social history of Christendom. However, this 'thesis'' has triggered some vehement debates, given that men have continued to dominate the churches, and the churches themselves have reacted to the association of religion and femininity, often formulated by their critics, by explicitly focusing their appeal to men. In this book the authors critically reflect upon the use of concepts like feminization and masculinization in relation to Christianity. By presenting case studies that adopt different gendered
