The decades around 1800 constitute the seminal period of European nationalism. The linguistic corollary of this was the rise of standard language ideology, from Finland to Spain, and from Iceland to the Habsburg Empire. Amidst these international events, the case of Dutch in the Netherlands offers a unique example. After the rise of the ideology from the 1750s onwards, the new discourse of one language-one nation was swiftly transformed into concrete top-down policies aimed at the dissemination of the newly devised standard language across the entire population of the newly established Dutch nation-state. Thus, the Dutch case offers an exciting perspective on the concomitant rise of cultural nationalism, national language planning and standard language ideology. This study offers a comprehensive yet detailed analysis of these phenomena by focussing on the ideology underpinning the new language policy, the institutionalisation of this ideology in metalinguistic discourse, the implementation of the policy in education, and the effects of the policy on actual language use.

The multi-volume work Syntax of Dutch presents a synthesis of current thinking on Dutch syntax. The text of the seven already available volumes was written between 1995 and 2015 and issued in print between 2012 and 2016. The various volumes are primarily concerned with the description of the Dutch language and, only where this is relevant, with linguistic theory. They will be an indispensable resource for researchers and advanced students of languages and linguistics interested in the Dutch language. This volume is the final one of the series and addresses issues relating to coordination. It contains three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the syntactic and semantic properties of coordinate structures and their constituting elements, that is, the coordinators and the coordinands they link. Chapter 2 discusses the types of ellipsis known as conjunction reduction and gapping found in coordinate structures. Chapter 3 discusses elements seemingly exhibiting coordination-like properties, such as 'dan' (than) in comparative constructions like 'Jan is groter dan zij' ( Jan is taller than she).

Waaraan herkennen wij een spreker als een Amsterdammer met een Marokkaanse achtergrond? En waaraan horen wij dat iemand een Nijmegenaar met Turkse wortels is? Wat heeft het taalgebruik van mensen met een Marokkaans een mensen met een Turkse achtergrond gemeen? Welke eigenaardigheden dringen door in 'inheemse' verschijningsvormen van het Nederlands?

In dit boek gaat het om deze en dergelijke vragen. Behalve het Marokkaanse en Turkse Nederlands komen daarbij onder meer het Surinaamse Nederlands en het Indonesische Nederlands, maar bijvoorbeeld ook het Joodse Nederlands aan de orde.

Het Nederlands varieert in toenemende mate ook in de culturele ruimte, die allereerst bepaald wordt door de oorspronkelijke godsdienstige en etnische achtergronden van de sprekers. Dit noem je etnolecten.

Etnolecten bevatten in het algemeen niet alleen exotische verschijnselen, zoals elementen uit de oorspronkelijk moedertaal. Maar ook verschijnselen die kenmerkend zijn voor tweedetaalverwerving (de meisje, de mooie meisje die daar loopt).

Etnolecten hebben onder jongeren een groeiend prestige en zijn deel van hun identiteit. Woorden en uitspraakgewoonten uit etnolecten komen via de straatcultuur, muziek, media en bekende figuren (Ali B) in de taal van jongeren terecht. Het boek is rijkelijk geïllustreerd met voorbeelden uit onder meer populaire tienersoaps.

Nederlands in het perspectief van uitspraakverwerving en contrastieve taalkunde (“Dutch from the point of view of pronunciation acquisition and contrastive linguistics”) gives an overview of linguistic research carried out on Dutch by specialists from different parts of Europe. As the title suggests, the book covers two topics: (1) recent developments in the research into the pronunciation of Dutch as a second or foreign language, including research into pronunciation norms and the teaching of pronunciation; (2) recent theoretical and methodological developments in contrastive linguistics providing new insights about various cross-linguistic issues, including translation.
