Abstract

The first reference to letter writing occurs in the first text of western literature, Homer's Iliad. From the very beginning, Greeks were enthusiastic letter writers, and letter writing became a distinct literary genre. Letters were included in the works of historians but they also formed the basis of works of fiction, and the formal substructure for many kinds of poem. Patricia Rosenmeyer, an authority on the history of the Greek letter, assembles in this book a representative selection of such 'literary letters', from Aelian and Alciphron to Philostrartus and the supposed letters of Themistocles. The book will be valuable for all students of Greek literature especially those studying Greek (and Latin) letter.

Abstract

In this elementary textbook, Philip S. Peek draws on his twenty-five years of teaching experience to present the ancient Greek language in an imaginative and accessible way that promotes creativity, deep learning, and diversity. The course is built on three pillars: memory, analysis, and logic. Readers memorize the top 250 most frequently occurring ancient Greek words, the essential word endings, the eight parts of speech, and the grammatical concepts they will most frequently encounter when reading authentic ancient texts. Analysis and logic exercises enable the translation and parsing of genuine ancient Greek sentences, with compelling reading selections in English and in Greek offering starting points for contemplation, debate, and reflection. Abstract

Intermediate Ancient Greek Language is a series of Lessons and Exercises intended for students who have already covered most of an introductory course in the ancient Greek language. It aims to broaden and deepen students' understanding of the main grammatical constructions of Greek. Further attention is given to grammatical forms to illustrate their functions. In the Lessons, tragedy, comedy, historiography, oratory and philosophy are sources for dramatic material. The Cases have been deliberately placed late in the series of Lessons 36 to 41; students by now will be prepared to analyse Case usage. Consideration of prepositions in Lesson 42 naturally follows the Cases. Lesson 43, on correlative clauses, links with adjectival and adverbial constructions in previous Lessons. The final Lesson 44 deals with exclamations. Throughout the book, the author relies on genuine Greek sources for the passages in the Lessons and Exercises.

Abstract

Among the almost 200 copies containing Plutus, the 23 fourteenth-century codices analysed in the book are the most ancient after the vetustiores and their collation has enabled the construction of a stemma codicum which effectively represents the Byzantine scholars' study environments and how they intersect. The identification of a Tzetzian study circle, which must have drawn from ancient sources, has led to an understanding of the nature of a large part of the fourteenth-century testimonies, thereby avoiding the generic explanation of contaminatio. This work makes further, interesting contributions through its recognition of the characteristics of the "Thoman" edition and identification of a link between Thessalonica and Constantinople, and also has the merit of having created greater clarity in the complex and as yet unstudied tradition of Plutus.

Abstract

This volume is the 16th of the PSI series (started by Girolamo Vitelli in 1912) and contains the edition of 79 texts written in Greek on papyri or other materials (wood, parchment), coming from Egypt and kept at the Papyrological Institute «G. Vitelli». There are both fragments of famous Ancient Greek authors (Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Isocrates, Demosthenes, Plutarch; the Septuagint, Cyril of Alexandria, the Physiologist), as well as fragments of unknown works: among others, a grammar text on the Ionian dialect and a doxographic fragment on Aristotelian philosophy. Then, there are texts of documentary nature: petitions, tax receipts, registers, reports, private letters, testimony of the daily life in Egypt during Roman and Byzantine times.

Abstract

Lying between the grammarians' and rhetors' domains, Aesop's fables were known and employed in the Western and Eastern educational environments mainly for their intrinsically moral essence. Once having explored the literary and grammatical texts concerning the educational role of fables, the book is focussed on the direct witnesses of Latin and bilingual Latin-Greek fables (III-IV AD) coming from the Eastern school environments, of which a new annotated edition is given. A relevant contribution is offered both: 1. to the complex and (almost) anonymous tradition of fables between the ancient Greek Aesop and the Medieval Latin Romulus, and through Phaedrus, Avian and the Hermeneumata Pseudodositheana; 2. and to the role fables played in the second-language (L2) acquisition and in teaching/learning Latin as L2 between East and West.

Abstract

This edited volume explores the intermediality of image and text in Graeco-Roman sculpture. Through its choice of authors, disciplinary backgrounds are deliberately merged in order to bridge the traditional gap between archaeologists, epigraphists and philologists, who for a long time studied statues, material inscriptions and literary epigrams within the closely confined borders of their individual disciplines. Through its choice of objects, privileging works of which there are significant material remains, through its inclusion of all kinds of figural-cum-inscriptional designs, ranging from grand sculpture to reliefs and 'decorative' marble-objects, and through its methodological emphasis on 'close viewing' (and reading!) of individual objects, this volume focuses on the materiality of both sculpture and inscription. This perspective is enriched by two comparative chapters on inscribing Greek vases and Roman walls (graffiti). The intermediality of image and inscription is envisaged from various thematic angles, including the intricacies of combining image and epigram (both materially and in literary projection), the original production and reception of inscribed sculpture in its 'long life', the viewing and 'reading' of sculpture in a space of movement, the issue of (re-)naming statues, and the image and inscription in its social and gender-historical context.

Abstract

This is the fifth and final volume of lectures on textual criticism and classical philology - broadly understood - given within the framework of the Ars edendi research programme (2008-2015). ;Two of the six papers in this volume stem from a 2015 workshop on editorial theory and method, the theme of which dealt with fragments and the writing of commentaries. As regards the former, S. Douglas Olson problematizes the creation and continuation of scholarly knowledge concerning texts that have only come down to us in a fragmentary state, emphazising the challenges and pitfalls that lay in wait for the editor. Benjamin Millis offers a nuanced homage and apology for the traditional text edition with a scholarly commentary, especially underscoring its importance as a connective pathway between text and reader as well as the impetus it can give to scholarly research. ;The other four lectures were given at the concluding conference of the Ars edendi programme, held in August 2016. In a case study Cynthia Damon shares her reflections on how to digitally edit Pliny's Natural History in a form that will provide this work's rich reception history and at the same time its extensive use of sources, many of which are now lost. The digital component is also prominent in Odd Einar Haugen's contribution in which he shows that digital mark-up is also an editorial enterprise and how it can be useful for the textual scholar. Dorothea Weber gives an insider's view of the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, an editorial project on-going since 1864, and especially how improved cataloguing has led to numerous discoveries of texts by St. Augustine. As a conclusion to the volume, David Greetham, one of the founders of the Society for Textual Scholarship, reflects on three different methods for editing texts that have undergone various degrees of rescription, namely the oeuvres of Eriugena, Coleridge, and Eliot.
