During the celebrations for Leonardo's fifth centenary, and under the patronage of their Italian Committee, a "21st century workshop of knowledge" worked eagerly in an interdisciplinary key, ranging on many aspects (from engineering to philosophy of nature, to history of architecture, reading of sources, technical knowledge, project analysis, cartographic interpretation), with the aim of contributing to the advancement of studies on an artist-researcher who synthesized the knowledge of his time in an extraordinary verbal-visual language, pushing them forward with anticipations and intuitions which are still relevant for the contemporary project, interpreting the territory as a common good and a living being. The volume presents the outcomes of this intense work.

Among his hydraulic designs, Leonardo planned the construction of an artificial lake in an area east of the castle of Vinci, his native village. The project, a surprising demonstration of his perfect knowledge of places where he lived, is illustrated in three drawings found and studied by Renzo Cianchi. Today, it is particularly interesting to analyze the feasibility of Leonardo's project, by chronologically translating it to the 21st century, namely in 2020. Based on an accurate hydrologic analysis, this paper aims at providing further insights on Leonardo's study, focusing on the feasibility of the dam.

The paper analyses Leonardo's main studies concerning the navigability of Milan waterways in order to contextualize and highlight his original contributions. Not only do Leonardo's studies outline the actual situation of such waterways, they also include new projects and innovations. Even though these are not always ascribable to Leonardo, he certainly drew and examined them himself. The analysis is based on the study of the main transformations of Milan water system and territory over the centuries.

The Pontine territory, located in southern Lazio, once ʽpalus pontinaʼ, has been represented over the centuries through iconographic views, cartographic drawings, literary documentation, and designed through reclamation works that allowed, over time, to dry up and anthropize the land. The two moments of representation and design of the Pontine territory are clearly reflected in Leonardo's Cartographic view of the Pontine plain and the coast north of Terracina, of which the paper presents a critical reading.

Leonardo's multifaceted experience has often been celebrated as a key historical legacy placed in a distant past. However, an interdisciplinary investigation of Leonardo's thought, studies and design intentionality, trying to combine art and science, has highlighted the cornerstones of an ante litteram territorialist vision. To the finished product, Leonardo always prefers the knowledge of the most intimate relationships among components of the territory, always understood as a living being, thus giving posterity an immense gallery of possibilities. Therefore, Leonardo's complex and integrated vision is a viaticum for the project of today's manifold territory.

Leonardo's manuscripts contain many quotes of 'his' Western Alps, well-known mountains sketched, with lakes, rivers and towns, creating outstanding territorial readings. In the 19th century, he became a turning point between medieval representation techniques and the great cartographic reform of the 16th century. Leonardo's approach to territorial drawing, his evolutionary theories on the history of the Earth, his measuring and survey instruments, his calculation of mountains altitudes can be compared to subsequent maps confirming, , with ideal overlaps, the crystal clear anticipations of the 'Grande di Vinci'.

During Cesare Borgia's expedition in Romagna, Leonardo da Vinci designed many public works for Cesena but it is still unclear if he worked in other cities of the region. In particular, a possible passage through Faenza should be investigated. Some scholars think that a drawing of Leonardo's notebook L (Paris, Institut de France) could be a representation of Faenza cathedral, but this attribution is disputed. Moreover, in Faenza's countryside there are some original castles with hexagonal, rhomboid or ogival plan. It is not clear if Leonardo knew these buildings, perhaps even before the Borgian military campaign.
