Abstract

Convertases are widely expressed activating enzymes involved in various physiological and pathological processes. The purpose of this book is to provide detailed and updated information on the role of these molecules in cancer. This book is the first to summarize current knowledge about the importance of protein precursors maturation by the convertases in tumor progression, angiogenesis and metastasis. In each chapter, the importance of the convertases in the activation of various cancer-related molecules including growth factors, adhesion molecules and proteases is discussed. Also this book covers the role of some convertases in the clinical setting. The book will be of interest to basic researchers as well as clinicians. Abstract

Focuses on molecular aspects of the mechanisms involved in chemical, physical, and viral (biological) carcinogenesis. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the structure, expression, or function of genes or gene products associated with normal growth and differentiation and alterations in neoplasia; characterization of genes or gene products expressed in preneoplastic or neoplastic cells; molecular studies that define a specific function of a tumor-associated protein or its effects on cellular function; virtually all research on molecular aspects of oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and their gene products; carcinogenesis studies in transgenic mice; and research on human tumor viruses.

Abstract

Tumors can be induced by a variety of physical and chemical carcinogens. The resulting tumor cells are usually abnormal in their morphology and behavior and transmit their abnormalities to their daughter tumor cells. Most theories of the pathogenesis of tumors suggest that carcinogens in some way cause alterations either of the genomes or of inheritable patterns of gene expression in normal cells, which then cause morphological and behavioral changes. This volume presents a collection of articles aimed at the question by what genetic or epigenetic mechanisms carcinogens can cause morphological abnormalities of tumor cells. It includes reviews of cellular targets of known carcinogens, and presents varying viewpoints of how morphological abnormalities and the actions of carcinogens might be related. The volume will be of interest to all those who are involved in cancer research or in the prevention, diagnosis or management of tumors in humans or animals.
