Abstract

Eduard Steuermann (1892-1964), Austrian-Polish-Jewish pianist from Galicia, student of Busoni, teacher and friend of Adorno, exiled American, sought-after soloist and pedagogue between Vienna, New York and Darmstadt, sought throughout his life the "almost impossible": to reconcile truth and beauty in uncompromising "devotion to music". The esteem in which he was held as the most important pianist for the establishment of New Piano Music, not only by the Viennese Schoenberg circle, has had a lasting effect on an appreciation of his person that goes beyond this. In 14 contributions that look at Steuermann from very different angles - discussing his life, his family and artistic ties, his music-making and composing, his work as a teacher and witty author - the view of the breadth of his work is widened on the basis of numerous previously unexplored materials, and the portrait of an artist who, according to Adorno, embodied the "conscience" of music itself is drawn.

Abstract

Abstract

"As jazz enters its second century it is reasserting itself as dynamic and relevant. Boston Globe jazz writer and Emerson College professor William Beutter reveals new ways in which jazz is engaging with society through the vivid biographies and music of Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, The Bad Plus, Miguel Zenón, Anat Cohen, Robert Glasper, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Julian Lage, and Esperanza Spalding. These musicians are freely incorporating other genres of music into jazz-from classical (both western and Indian) to popular (hip-hop, RB, rock, bluegrass, klezmer, Brazilian choro)-and other art forms as well (literature, film, photography, and other visual arts). This new generation of jazz is increasingly more international and is becoming more open to women as instrumentalists and bandleaders. Contemporary jazz is reasserting itself as a force for social change, prompted by developments such as the Black Lives Matter, #MeToo movements, and the election of Donald Trump"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Among all artists in Norway, musicians are the majority, and this book is all about them. Musicians work in many different fields, across a broad spectrum of professional roles, and they express themselves in many different genres. You experience them at clubs and on concert stages nationally and internationally. You find them at the podium leading a philharmonic and in the orchestra pit when musicals, plays, dance, and opera are on the program. You encounter them as teachers in music schools, elementary schools, and high schools. You meet them as musical directors and motivators behind choirs, marching bands, and folk music groups. You meet them in our churches and as driving forces in big cities and remote towns, in school gymnasiums and community house auditoriums. The twelve chapters focus attention on musicians' actual jobs and daily work life. The book describes transformations and trends within the music industry and society in general that have an impact on musicians' professional development and wellbeing. The book's four parts look at changes in the musician's role, professionalization, digitalization, and cultural-political and societal developments that all influence working conditions in the music industry, resulting in differing circumstances for different types of musicians.

Abstract

It is often assumed that creative people are prone to psychological instability, and that this explains apparent associations between cultural production and mental health problems. In their detailed study of recording and performing artists in the British music industry, Sally Anne Gross and George Musgrave turn this view on its head. By listening to how musicians understand and experience their working lives, this book proposes that whilst making music is therapeutic, making a career from music can be traumatic. The authors show how careers based on an all-consuming passion have become more insecure and devalued. Artistic merit and intimate, often painful, self-disclosures are the subject of unremitting scrutiny and data metrics. Personal relationships and social support networks are increasingly bound up with calculative transactions. Drawing on original empirical research and a wide-ranging survey of scholarship from across the social sciences, their findings will be provocative for future research on mental health, wellbeing and working conditions in the music industries and across the creative economy. Going beyond self-help strategies, they challenge the industry to make transformative structural change. Until then, the book provides an invaluable guide for anyone currently making their career in music, as well as those tasked with training and educating the next generation.

Abstract

Chr.

Abstract

This book brings together research at the intersection of music, cultural industries, management, antiracist politics and gender studies to analyse music as labour, in particular highlighting social inequalities and activism. Providing insights into labour processes and practices, the authors investigate the changing role of manifold actors, institutions and technologies and the corresponding shifts in the valuation and evaluation of music achievements that have shaped the relationship between music, labour, the economy and politics. With research into a variety of geographic regions, chapters shed light on the various ways by which musicians' work is performed, constructed and managed at different times and show that musicians' working practices have been marked by precarity, insecurity and short-term contracts long before capitalism invited everybody to 'be creative'. In doing so, they specifically examine the dynamics in music professions and educational institutions, as well as gatekeepers and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. With a specific emphasis on inequalities in the music industries, this book will be essential reading for scholars seeking to understand the collective actions and initiatives that foster participation, inclusion, diversity and fair pay amongst musicians and other workers.
