Abstract

Looking at the development of cultural identity in the global context, this text uses the approach of historical anthropology. It examines the way in which the West Indian Community of Nevis, has, since the 1600s, incorporated both African and European cultural elements into the framework of social life, to create an Afro-Caribbean culture that was distinctive and yet geographically unbounded - a "global culture". The book takes as its point of departure the processes of cultural interaction and reflectivity. It argues that the study of cultural continuity should be guided by the notion of cultural complexity involving the continuous constitution, development and assertion of culture. It emphasizes the interplay between local and global cultures, and examines the importance of cultural display for peoples who have experienced the process of socioeconomic marginalization in the Western world.

Abstract

On Features of Word Usage in Dostoevsky's Poetic Dictionary in Connection with M.L. Uralskij and G. Mondry's Dostoevsky and the Jews (St. Petersburg: Aletheia, 2021) . This article addresses the question of Dostoevsky's alleged anti-Semitism with particular attention to Uralskij and Mondry's book devoted to this topic, in which conclusions about the author's chauvinism and xenophobia are based on his use of the word 'Jew' (zhid). For almost the entirety of the 19th century, however, such word usage was not a marker of anti-Semitism. Throughout his life, Dostoevsky communicated with many representatives of the Jewish people without differentitating them in any particular way from representatives of other nationalities. In the writer's poetic dictionary, the word 'Jew' sometimes denotes a person who acquires unscrupulously, examples of which Dostoevsky found in all nationalities of the world, including the Russian.

Abstract

Part of public opinion believes that Article 3 of the Italian Constitution should be reformulated by eliminating the word "race", because of its historical meanings. Some jurists disagree with this opinion believing that this presence is still justified by the need to fight possible discrimination or to protect minority rights. Biologists have also entered the debate, asserting that this word cannot be used to refer to human races because there's no scientific basis for race. Cleared up any doubt about the origin of the term and the use that should be made of it, to contribute to today's debate, we have verified how this term was used in the language of law, using the terminological resources of the Institute of Legal Informatics and Judicial Systems (IGSG) - CNR databases.

Abstract

Hardly any other topic polarized the Federal Republic's public in recent years as sustainably as the publication of the tendency towards racist theorems Thilo Sarrazins in the summer of 2010. Racist resentments once again proved to be established and debated here in many parts of German society, like the sales success of Sarrazin's bestseller "Germany abolishes itself" demonstrates. The present work focuses on this current, in particular biological-genetic, racism phenomenon in the Federal Republic of Germany in the period from 2007 to 2013. It analyzes the distribution, the conditions in which it originated and the scientific reality of biological, racist arguments in Germany. For this purpose, this work uses a combined research approach of social and natural sciences to analyze and assess the current racism phenomenon from both a social science and a biological perspective.
