This book provides a comparative and transnational examination of the complex and multifaceted experiences of anti-labour mobilisation, from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. It retraces the formation of an extensive market for corporate policing, privately contracted security and yellow unionism, as well as processes of professionalisation in strikebreaking activities, labour espionage and surveillance. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era. -- Provided by publisher.

"Global news on anthropogenic climate change is shaped by international politics, scientific reports and voices from transnational protest movements. This timely volume asks how local communities engage with these transnational discourses. Looking at communities from Greenland to Tanzania, it illuminates how different understandings evolve in diverse cultural and geographical contexts while also revealing some common patterns of how people make sense of climate change. This book is a valuable resource to those studying climate and science communication; those interested in understanding the various roles played by journalism, NGOs, politics and science in shaping public understandings of climate change, as well as those exploring the intersections of the global and the local in debates on the sustainable transformation of societies." - Provided by publisher.

The works contained in this edited volume represent the culmination of eight years of effort to plant and develop the foundation of an interdisciplinary African urban research network anchored in African institutions. With initial support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Cities Alliance, the creation of the African Urban Research Initiative (AURI) network was subsequently fortified by the Ford Foundation’s call for scholarship oriented towards urbanism in the global South. Based at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, AURI was thus designed to support and, where needed, strengthen exist-ing urban research centres on the African continent to produce credible and robust new knowledge on urban conditions in African cities.

The Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane is a fictional psychiatric institution. It is where Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the main character ina series of suspense novels by Thomas Harris, has been incarcerated for avery long time. Dr. Lecter is highly intelligent, erudite, and intellectual, but atthe same time devoid of empathy and afflicted with a macabre abnormalityin that, in terms of his preferred diet, he is partial to human flesh. Hence,he has acquired the nickname Hannibal the Cannibal. Hannibal Lecter iswithout doubt one of the most notorious serial killers in Western popular culture. For years, he has been locked up in the deepest, darkest cellar inthis establishment, where he receives visits only from mice, rats, and a stoicguard who comes to bring him food. His cell, at the end of the corridor, issmall, four by four meters, with three stone walls, no window, and a wall ofbars on the fourth side. How does Hannibal cope with this situation? How does he manage to counteract total madness and deal with the isolation? Heuses a well-known cognitive technique: he closes his eyes for a few hours aday and enters the palace of his imagination. This palace is imaginary butconstructed in great detail. It is strikingly large, made up of countless rooms, corridors, and halls, with windows opening up views onto all the places thatare important to Hannibal. The walls are adorned with frescos depicting his own memories, fantasies, and dreams for the future – all these scenes havetheir own place in the palace of his imagination and are retrievable down to the smallest detail.

Nobel laureate Elias Canetti wrote his novel Auto-da-Fe (Die Blendung) when he and the twentieth century were still quite young. Rooted in the cultural crises of the Weimar period, Auto-da-Fe first received critical acclaim abroad--in England, France, and the United States--where it continues to fascinate readers of subsequent generations. Critical reactions have abounded, but never has a comprehensive study placed this work in its cultural and philosophical contexts. The End of Modernism seeks to do just that, situating the novel not only in relation to Can

Byzantine art is normally explained as devotional, historical, highly intellectualized, but this book argues for an experiential necessity for a fuller, deeper, more ethical approach to this art. Written in response to an exhibition the author curated at The Menil Collection in 2013, these essays challenge us to search for novel ways to explore and interrogate the art of this distant culture. They marshal diverse disciplines-modern art, environmental theory, anthropology-to argue that Byzantine culture formed a special kind of Christian animism. While completely foreign to our world, that animism still holds important lessons for approaches to our own relations to the world. Mutual probings of subject and art, of past and present, arise in these essays-some new and some previously published-and new explanations therefore open up that will interest historians of art, museum professionals, and anyone interested in how art makes and remakes the world.
