Abstract

"The threat of ecological collapse is a possibility that is increasingly becoming a reality for the world's populations, both human and nonhuman. Addressing this global challenge will require enormous cultural creativity and demand a diversity of perspectives, especially those that deal with religion and the human sciences. Toward this end, this volume draws from a variety of academic disciplines and positions to explore the role and nature of environmental responsibility, especially where these intersect with religious or theological viewpoints. The disciplines, including history, philosophy, literature, politics, peace studies, economics, women's studies, and the ecological sciences, to name a few, have begun to develop distinct perspectives on the urgent ecological issues of our day, as well as pointing toward specific practices at the local and global level. This volume provides a multidisciplinary point of departure for conversations on environmental responsibility that resist simplistic solutions but rather highlight the complex nature of the ecological issues and provide conversations about potential ways forward in what appears to be an intractable global problem of huge complexity."--

Abstract

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with an accessible guide to the most significant developments in Hume's scholarship, while, at the same time, defending a general interpretatation of Hume's philosophy. The main contention of the work is that by seeing Hume's metaphysical and epistemological arguments from this general perspective we can resolve certain interpretive controversies in Hume literature. It is possible to see Hume not as the arch-sceptic, the negative and destructive thinker whose main contribution to the history of philosophy was to awaken Kant from his "dogmatic slumbers", but as an original and important theorist of human nature, whose true significance to the history of ideas is yet to be reckoned with. As the title suggests, this book is concerned with the relationship between Hume's scepticism and his theory of human nature. This, the author suggests, is the the central interpretive issue of Hume scholarship.

Abstract

What does it mean to be human in a world of technology? What could be the role of religion in responding to the ecological crisis? Should we be concerned about the modification of food, and even of ourselves? Who do we trust to make decisions regarding our common future? What do we use our technology for? These are not questions for experts only. How can the wider public be involved? Do experts and the general public trust each other sufficiently? Or is the public ignorant, in the eyes of the scientists? And are too many engineers narrow minded, according to the general public? The contributors to this timely and necessary volume address expertise, trust and engagement, as we consider our technological condition , religious resources for the ecological crisis , biotechnology , and matters of trust between scientists and the general public. With contributions from leading scholars in the field, including James Miller from Queen's University, Canada and Tony Watling from the University College, London, this book will captivate a range of readers interested in the spirtitual dimension of our culture and society.

Abstract

In this introduction to philosophy of biology, Kim Sterelny and Paul E. Griffiths present both the science and the philosophical context necessary for a critical understanding of the debates shaping biology at the end of the 20th century. Is the history of life a series of accidents or a drama scripted by selfish genes? Is there an "essential" human nature, determined at birth or in a distant evolutionary past? What should we conserve -- species, ecosystems, or something else? Informed answers to questions like these, critical to our understanding of ourselves and the world around us, require both a knowledge of biology and a philosophical framework within which to make sense of its findings. In this accessible introduction to philosophy of biology, Kim Sterelny and Paul E. Griffiths present both the science and the philosophical context necessary for a critical understanding of the most exciting debates shaping biology today. The authors, both of whom have published extensively in this field, describe the range of competing views--including their own--on these fascinating topics. With its clear explanations of both biological and philosophical concepts, Sex and Death will appeal not only to undergraduates, but also to the many general readers eager to think critically about the science of life.

Abstract

"Based on the Duffy Lectures, a yearly lecture series at Boston College, this book explores the theme of "Deep Incarnation" as a way of making connections between incarnation and the whole of creation, including the costs built into our evolutionary world. The key question of "Deep Incarnation," for Edwards, is: "What relationship is there between the wider natural world, the world of galaxies and stars, mountains and seas, bacteria, plants and animals, and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ?" To approach this theme, Edwards draws upon the work of Niels Gregersen (the "father of Deep Incarnation"), Elizabeth Johnson, and others. He then engages with Irenaeus, Athanius, and Karl Rahner as three great witnesses to a deep view of incarnation, and concludes with his own constructive approach to the book's theme."

Abstract

Concern for the environment has developed and intensified over the last few decades to the point where it now dominates much of our contemporary political landscape and culture. The rise of religious environmentalism in particular adds its own distinctive voice to the debate, for it seeks to trace both the malaise and a potential solution to environmental understanding. In Eco-Theology, Celia Deane-Drummond offers a comprehensive resource book for this burgeoning field of enquiry that highlights and seeks to evaluate the merits or otherwise of contemporary eco-theologies. She introduces the reader to critical debates in eco-theology, tracing trends from around the globe and key theological responses, and encourages reflection and analysis through further reading sections at the end of each chapter and questions for discussion.
