Abstract

This volume is the first in what hopefully will be a growing set of edited volumes and monographs concerning Niger-Congo comparative studies. This first volume addresses matters that are relevant to the entire East Benue-Congo family as well as the particular branches Kainji, Plateau, and Bantoid. In the case of Bantoid, the particular focus is on Grassfields and the Grassfields-Bantu borderland, though other Bantoid subgroups are referenced. The potential topics for comparative studies among these languages are numerous, but this volume is dedicated to presentations on nominal affixes, third person pronouns, and verbal extensions. A forthcoming volume will provide some results of reconstructions and lexicostatistics in Cross River, exploratory reconstructions in Southern Jukunoid, and reconstructions in Ekoid-Mbe and Mambiloid.

Abstract

Abstract

'I want you to go up the Isango, Bones,' said Sanders, 'there may be some trouble there - a woman is working miracles.' Unexpected things happen in the territories of the Belgian Congo where Sanders keeps an uneasy peace, aided by Hamilton and hindered, unintentionally, by the trouble prone Bones.

Abstract

This revised edition of Bats of Southern and Central Africa builds on the solid foundation of the first edition and supplements the original account of bat species then known to be found in Southern and Central Africa with an additional eight newly described species, bringing the total to 124. The chapters on evolution, biogeography, ecology and echolocation have been updated, citing dozens of recently published papers. The book covers the latest systematic and taxonomic studies, ensuring that the names and relationships of bats in this new edition reflect current scientific knowledge. The species accounts provide descriptions, measurements and diagnostic characters as well as detailed information about the distribution, habitat, roosting habits, foraging ecology and reproduction of each species. The updated species distribution maps are based on 6 100 recorded localities. A special feature of the 2010 publication was the mode of identification of families, genera and species by way of character matrices rather than the more generally used dichotomous keys. Since then these matrices have been tested in the field and, where necessary, slightly altered for this edition. New photographs fill in gaps and updated sonograms aid with bat identification in acoustic surveys. The bibliography, which now contains more than 700 entries, will be an invaluable aid to students and scientists wishing to consult original research.

Abstract

We are currently witnessing the settlement of the world's peri-urban areas by hundreds of millions of people. This development poses formidable problems and unprecedented difficulties for public policies. While the effects of peri-urbanization are relatively well known in the countries of the North, analyses dedicated to the countries of the South are much less developed. The book "Territoires périurbains: développement, enjeux et perspectives dans les pays du Sud" (Peri-urban territories: development, issues and perspectives in the South) lifts the veil on this issue and on the major challenges that peri-urbanization poses for the South in general and for Central Africa in particular. The book begins by seeking to clarify what exactly is meant by "peri-urban territory". Following this contextualization, it continues with five parts organized around the issues of natural resources, food security, public health, public services and land use planning. For each of these issues, specialized researchers from a variety of disciplines make contributions that, while highlighting the magnitude of the challenges, allow for the development of innovative solutions to improve governance and the well-being of populations. This book is primarily intended for researchers concerned with the challenges of development. At the same time, through the avenues for public action that it outlines, it will also be of interest to decision-makers and practitioners who operate in the context of peri-urban territories in the South.

Abstract

The forests of the Congo Basin are the second largest tropical forest in the world. For a long time, conflicts of use have been numerous. In order to preserve its ecosystem services, the exploitation of these forests should integrate the principles of sustainable management. Information, education, training and outreach work is therefore necessary within Congolese society. University cooperation is an appropriate way to meet this need for training for all actors concerned with the resources present in the forests of Tshopo (former Province Orientale). A targeted inter-university project financed by ARES (formerly CUD) entitled "Support for the organization of a master's degree in forest management to strengthen the capacities of Congolese researchers with a view to the socio-economic recovery of the Democratic Republic of Congo - AFORCO" provided for two main activities: postgraduate training and the production of doctoral theses in disciplines relevant to forest management. The capacities of 16 experts were strengthened through a DES in sustainable forest management at the University of Kisangani (2009-2011); in December 2015, two PhD theses were presented and defended at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech in the fields of wood biology and landscape ecology. This book provides a review of the studies carried out thanks to the AFORCO project and related projects, mainly in the form of final works and PhD theses on the forest ecosystems of the Tshopo. This book is primarily intended for researchers concerned with the challenges of sustainable development in developing countries characterized by the presence of still abundant natural resources. The studies presented highlight the added value of academic cooperation, the need for long-term scientific collaborations and the potential synergies of North-South academic exchanges.
