Abstract

Étienne-Léon de Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) is, without a doubt, a true giant of the popular literature of the first half of the 19th century. As one of the most prolific authors of his time, he knew how to adapt to the literary tastes of the public from the end of the Napoleonic era until the fall of the July Monarchy. Firstly, the present study outlines the biography of this now largely forgotten writer, a key factor for understanding his literary career, and it gives an overview of his work. At the beginning of the first chapter, particular emphasis is put on the diary of Lamothe-Langon dating from 1809. Later in the chapter, the reception of Lamothe-Langon’s novels in the press of time and his literary posterity are examined. The following chapter focuses on the analysis of the paratext, an essential factor shedding light on many otherwise hidden aspects of the chosen corpus consisting of the eleven novels of Lamothe-Langon belonging to the Gothic genre. The third part of the book is devoted to the dark but fascinating universe of Lamothe-Langon’s novelistic world characterized by a highly heterogeneous assortment of characters in a spatio-temporal framework defined by a whole range of diverse phenomena proper to the world of Gothic fiction. Finally, an important aspect of the novels belonging to the corpus, namely their hybridity, both formal and generic, is thoroughly examined taking into consideration the intrinsic correlation existing between the analyzed novels and the dominant genres of their period, such as the Gothic fiction, the fantastique, the sentimental novel and the historical novel.

Abstract

This volume explores the challenges and possibilities of research into the European dimensions of popular print culture.Popular print culture has traditionally been studied with a national focus. Recent research has revealed, however, that popular print culture has many European dimensions and shared features. A group of specialists in the field has started to explore the possibilities and challenges of research on a wide, European scale. This volume contains the first overview and analysis of the different approaches, methodologies and sources that will stimulate and facilitate future comparative research. This volume first addresses the benefits of a media-driven approach, focussing on processes of content recycling, interactions between text and image, processes of production and consumption. A second perspective illuminates the distribution and markets for popular print, discussing audiences, prices and collections. A third dimension refers to the transnational dimensions of genres, stories, and narratives. A last perspective unravels the communicative strategies and dynamics behind European bestsellers. This book is a source of inspiration for everyone who is interested in research into transnational cultural exchange and in the fascinating history of popular print culture in Europe.

Abstract

A man is changed into a flea and must bring his future parents together in order to become human again. A woman convinces a river god to cure her sick son, but the remedy has mixed consequences. A young man must choose whether to be close to his wife's soul or body. And two deaf mutes transcend their physical existence in the garden of dreams. Strange and fantastical, these fairy tales of Béla Balázs (1884-1949), Hungarian writer, film critic, and famous librettist of Bluebeard's Castle, reflect his profound interest in friendship, alienation, and Taoist philosophy. Translated and introduced by Jack Zipes, one of the world's leading authorities on fairy tales, The Cloak of Dreams brings together sixteen of Balázs's unique and haunting stories. Written in 1921, these fairy tales were originally published with twenty images drawn in the Chinese style by painter Mariette Lydis, and this new edition includes a selection of Lydis's brilliant illustrations. Together, the tales and pictures accentuate the motifs and themes that run throughout Balázs's work: wandering protagonists, mysterious woods and mountains, solitude, and magical transformation. His fairy tales express our deepest desires and the hope that, even in the midst of tragedy, we can transcend our difficulties and forge our own destinies. Unusual, wondrous fairy tales that examine the world's cruelties and twists of fate, The Cloak of Dreams will entertain, startle, and intrigue.

Abstract

He wrote under at least eight pseudonyms, published hundreds of short stories and novellas in pulp magazines, and lived a life at times as outrageous as his fiction. Pulp Writer tells of Paul S. Powers's travels from serious literary ambitions to the pages of Wild West Weekly , of his seeking his fortune (or material, at any rate) in the ghost towns and mining camps of Colorado, and of his life in Arizona and California as he reaped the rewards of his wildly successful Wild West Weekly characters such as Sonny Tabor and Kid Wolf.

Abstract

The year 2019 marked the 300th anniversary of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. His novel was a huge success right away and was soon followed by bootlegs and translations. With the robinsonade, an independent genre of adventure literature was born. These contributions examine the novel within the context of bookselling history, provide new interpretations, and shed light on its multifaceted adaptation history up into the twenty-first century.
