Rock Art and prehistoric human Settlements in Yemen reviews the current state of the knowledge in this domain. In addition to the iconographic inventory of the prehistoric rock art of the regions of Saada and Rada', established by Madiha Rachad, a team directed by Frank Braemer made a new discovery in the region of al-Dali'. This book is thus revealing remarkable rock art pieces and paintings of animals, as well as human representations and signs. These works, at first engraved by hunters, then also painted, illustrate as well the first periods of animal domesticating in South Arabia.

The cave of Pergouset, a narrow cavity inundated by the floods of the River Lot, is an archetypal "secret sanctuary", decorated with 153 magdalenian engravings. Ten years of excavation and multidisciplinary studies have made it possible to analyse the traces of occupation left in the cave’s fill, and to investigate the parietal motifs which, in addition to naturalistic animal depictions, include a dozen "monsters" and some human figures, which pose the question of a mythology concerning the origins of the world.

Paul G. Bahn provides a richly illustrated overview of prehistoric rock art and cave art from around the world. Summarizing the recent advances in our understanding of this extraordinary visual record, he discusses new discoveries, new approaches to recording and interpretation, and current problems in conservation. Bahn focuses in particular on current issues in the interpretation of rock art, notably the 'shamanic' interpretation that has been influential in recent years and that he refutes. This book is based on the Rhind Lectures that the author delivered for the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2006.

Norbert Aujoulat is head of the cave art section at the National Prehistory Centre in Perigueux (Ministry of Culture and Communication/Department of Archaeology). The descriptive analysis of a prehistoric painting or engraving depends, to a great extent, on its reproduction, which, in its turn, depends on a specific methodology and appropriate material. This book is a synthesis of earlier work dealing with reproduction techniques and is also the result of several years of personal research into the photographic recording of data and their Processing by computer in the laboratory. Highly didactic, it is intended as a practical manual, indispensable for any research in the field of cave art.

"The earliest rock art in the Americas as elsewhere - is geometric or abstract. Until now, however, no book-length study has been devoted to the deep antiquity and amazing range of geometrics and the fascinating questions that arise from their ubiquity and variety. Why did they precede representational marks? What is known about their origins and functions? Why and how did humans begin to make marks, and what does this practice tell us about the early human mind? With some two hundred striking color images and discussions of chronology, dating, sites, and styles, this pioneering investigation of abstract geometrics on stone (as well as bone, ivory, and shell) explores its wide-ranging subject from the perspectives of ethnology, evolutionary biology, cognitive archaeology, and the psychology of artmaking. The authors' approach instills a greater respect for a largely unknown and underappreciated form of paleoart, suggesting that before humans became Homo symbolicus or even Homo religiosus, they were mark-makers - Homo aestheticus"--Rabat de la couverture.
