À l'heure actuelle où nos besoins énergétiques sont grandissants, le débat sur la transition énergétique et sur nos ressources disponibles reste ouvert. L'actuel système énergétique de l'humanité, reposant à 80 % sur des fossiles (charbon, pétrole, gaz naturel), présents en quantité limitée dans l'écorce terrestre et dont la combustion émet de grandes quantités de gaz à effet de serre, n'est pas durable. Il est destiné à subir au cours du XXIe siècle des modifications profondes. Quelle sera son évolution ? Sans prétendre apporter une prévision qui aurait toute chance d'être démentie par les faits, cet ouvrage vise à dresser un tableau des options énergétiques telles qu'on peut les anticiper en ce début de siècle. L'éventail des possibles est assez étendu, mais les choix seront contraints par la limitation des ressources, par l'économie et par la nécessité de prévenir les atteintes à l'environnement entraînant notamment une menace de réchauffement climatique. Ce livre présente les données et les tendances dans des domaines aussi variés que la démographie, l'exploitation des ressources, les réseaux de transport, le rythme des découvertes et des innovations... ainsi qu'une analyse des divers scénarios jusqu'à maintenant envisagés. Des technologies traditionnelles, émergentes ou encore embryonnaires aujourd'hui, des avancées substantielles en vue de l'efficacité énergétique pourraient apporter leur contribution à un développement de l'humanité compatible avec les contraintes environnementales. More and more people believe we must quickly wean ourselves from fossil fuels - oil, natural gas and coal - to save the planet from environmental catastrophe, wars and economic collapse. In this 2006 book, Professor Jaccard argues that this view is misguided. We have the technological capability to use fossil fuels without emitting climate-threatening greenhouse gases or other pollutants. The transition from conventional oil and gas to their unconventional sources including coal for producing electricity, hydrogen and cleaner-burning fuels will decrease energy dependence on politically unstable regions. In addition, our vast fossil fuel resources will be the cheapest source of clean energy for the next century and perhaps longer, which is critical for the economic and social development of the world's poorer countries. By buying time for increasing energy efficiency, developing renewable energy technologies and making nuclear power more attractive, fossil fuels will play a key role in humanity's quest for a sustainable energy system.
